Unread post by kingk » Fri Jul 11, 2014 10:20 pm

Hello anyone,

I am a new odroid-u3 user, I was just wondering if there are some images with the latest official Ubuntu 14.04 and latest Android in dual boot os, I have just found the Ubuntu 13 and Andorid image downloadable from here: http://bit.ly/1i11nII or http://bit.ly/1i6bSWQ

Best Regards
Ugo

We will consider it as an August project.
Ubuntu 14.04 + Android 4.4.4

If you can't wait, please follow the instruction in the ODROID Magazine May issue.

Thank you for your reply, I think it may be too much difficult for me to build an image with Ubuntu 14.04 + Android 4.4.4 but I may try.
Kind Regards

Hi All,

I am a newbie for U3,
after I download the image from http://www.odroid.in/mirror/dn.odroid.com/4412/Dual_OS/

How can I flash image into U3.
Any hints? or any documentation. ( I am a experienced RK3188 user, able to flash ROM, but I am newbie in U3 ><")

Like
01. install ODROID ADB driver for Windows
02. OS Image flashing tool for Windows.
03. flashing image ???

thanks any information if providing.

Yes, it is correct.

Generic OS installation steps..
1. Download an OS image and check the md5sum
2. Uncompress it to img file with 7zip or xz.
3. Flash the img file to eMMC or SD card with a USB card read.

Are we to assume (hopefully) sometime this month we'll have a system dual-booting/concurrently running in a similar manner to what the folks at VolksPC are proposing..? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y8hgh9LnoE If so I am just a teeny tiny little bit EXCITED for this future development.

Same question: Will there be a dual-boot image for 14.04 LTS + Android on the U3? When will that be?

We don't have any plan at this moment.
We may consider it as a October project.

I'm trying out the instructions to make dual boot as given in May edition of odroid magazine.

I was able to get Ubuntu 14.04 with android 4.1.2 working.

Can i get system.img for Kitkat version so that i can upgrade the android part also. The repository is very huge and its not downloaded in 2 days also.

Please advice.

Tried the May Magzine instructions with KitKat but didn't compile. Do you have any plans to publish instructions for Dual boot with Kitkat.

You can run KVM on the XU3 now, allowing Android to be run inside Ubuntu. There will be an article in the November issue of ODROID Magazine detailing the installation process.

The dual boot guide published in May referes to Android code of 4.1.2. While everyone wants to have it with latest android version. Moreover if you go by instructions of May Magazine issue most of the source file have changed. Can you repost the instrcutions for dual boot with ubuntu and kitkat on odroid-u3.

Because we are heavily considering to develop the Android 5.0 Lollipop for U3 these days, it is almost impossible to make a time slot.
It is a really important project for 2~3 months. Please understand this situation.

Dual Boot lubuntu 14.04.1lts with Android Kitkat 4.4.4 on OD

Unread post by aks » Fri Dec 26, 2014 1:30 am

Dual Boot lubuntu 14.04.1lts with Android Kitkat 4.4.4 on ODROID-U3

Assumptions
1. 16 GB SD or EMMC card
2. Linux PC
3. Adapter for connecting SD/EMMC to PC
4. Android and lubuntu latest image files
android- android-4.4.4_alpha-4.5-emmc_installer-odroidu-20141209.img
Lubuntu-ubuntu-14.04.1lts-lubuntu-odroid-u-20141124.img
5. /dev/sdX is the device detected for SD or EMMC card. According to your PC it may differ as sdc, sdd ...
6. In this setup there is seprate partitions for Linux(6) and Android (2,3)
7. Common fat32 partitions is used in both OS. In linux mounted on /media/boot and in Android mounted as /sdcard
8. All command would require sudo access

Steps on Linux PC

1. Download latest android release and extract the image. Ater extract using xz -d filename you'll get android-4.4.4_alpha-4.5-emmc_installer-odroidu-20141209.img file. You can download SD card version of the file if wish to use SD card instead of EMMC.

2. Connect the EMMC card to PC using card reader and Burn the android image on emmc card using this
sudo dd if=android-4.4.4_alpha-4.5-emmc_installer-odroidu-20141209.img of=/dev/sdX (/dev/sdX is the detected device for emmc on PC)

3. Connect EMMC to odroid-u3 and boot. After some time it would bootup to Kitkat 4.4.4. Shutdown android and connect back EMMC to PC again.

4. Now open the emmc in gparted software on Linux (sudo gparted /dev/sdX) and you will see four partitions.(/dev/sdX1 sdX2 sdX3 sdX4).

These partitions have
Partitions 2 & 3 (ext4) --- Android related data
Partition 1 (fat32) --- Internal SDcard for Android
Partition 4 (ext4) --- Cache parition

Don't touch partition 2 & 3 and take backup of partition 1 & 4 on your PC in some folders.
Now follow following steps to repartition to create space for Linux partition

a) Delete partition 1 and partition 4
b) Now you will have single unallocated space, create 2 GB partition with fat32 (this should become partition 1 again)
c) Since there could be only four primary partitions possible so now we will create an extended partition and assign all unallocated space.
d) In my case this came to some 11+ GB. Now create a logical partition of 134 MB for cache and select ext4 filesystem
e) Create another logical partition and assign all the remaining space to it and make it ext4.
f) Click on green tick sign on gparted and write the layout.

After it completes partitions should be

Partitions 1 (fat32) appox 2GB
Partition 2 & 3 unchanges as above
Partition 4 will be extended partition having two logical partitions 5 and 6
Partition 5 (134MB) will cache partition
partition 6 (10GB) will be for Lubuntu

5. After writing mount all partitions on PC from naultis

6. Now mount the Lubuntu image downloaded on PC and copy boot partition data + earlier backed up partition 1 data back to partition 1.

7. Copy Lubuntu rootfs folders to 10 GB partition 6

8. Some modifications
Linux side
1. change UUID of lubuntu partition by ID given in boot.scr file in boot partition
sudo tune2fs /dev/sdX6 -U <id from boot.scr file>

2. Either change UUID in /etc/fstab for /media/boot according to you partition 1 or modify like this

/dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/boot vfat defaults,rw,owner,flush,umask=000 0 0

Android Side

1. on partition 2 or 3 you will find this file fstab.odroidu . Modify the cache partition from
/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 to /dev/block/mmcblk0p5

9. Copy these two scripts in fat32 partition
bootA.sh ---- will enable boot to Android
bootL.sh -----will enable boot to Lubuntu

bootA.sh
#!/bin/sh
cd /media/boot
mv boot.scr boot.scr.ubuntu
sync
reboot

bootL.sh
#!/bin/sh
cd /sdcard
mv boot.scr.ubuntu boot.scr
sync
reboot

10. Connect eMMC to odroid-u3 and if boot.scr exists in fat32 partition it will boot into Lubuntu. Then in linux you rename this file to
boot.scr.ubuntu and reboot it will take you to android. From android you can restore boot.scr.ubuntu to boot.scr in /sdcard and it will
boot to lubuntu again.

Enjoy !

For dual boot what i have done is created one icon on LUbuntu desktop which boots to android without asking any password. Once we boot in Android I have simple Application which boots to linux. This way its easy even if booted in wrong OS.

I can upload my image with all this integrated if hardkernel give me some location to upload.

Running other os in a virtual machine is not the best idea. A virtual machine environment is not optimal. Proper dual boot is what we need on any odroid device.

All odroid needs is a small bootloader, something similar to grub4dos, that can be run and detect all os on emmc, SD etc. That would be the best idea.
