Hi there! Long time fan of the XU4 and HC2 lines! I love working with them.

I've recently noticed some concerning kernel messages from my oldest XU4. Is this perhaps an indication of a failing eMMC module, or perhaps something with the board?

Hi.

Thanks for the response. Is there a way I can determine from a linux CLI the *specific* eMMC module? All I have from my notes is that:

32GB eMMC Module XU4 Linux

... was purchased May of 2018.

The unit is mounted in a... rather inaccessible location.

I am running kernel:

Linux cottdroid 4.14.165+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 12 23:00:18 UTC 2020 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux

I'd like to be a little more confident before I order some more hardware :-) Cheers.

Can you remember the eMMC module PCB color?

BTW, try checking the eMMC health status if possible.

Unfortunately, I can't be positive in my recollection, but I want to say that the pcb for the module was orange in colour.

Does this perhaps show anything concerning? Based on the other thread and the 'Life Time Estimations' above, it doesn't seem like a wear issue?

FWIW - I've ordered a replacement XU4 _and_ a replacement eMMC module (slightly larger one this time as well). I'll be attempting to build a replacement for this unit with these new parts once they come in.

The Orange eMMC module was introduced 3~4 years ago and it was made with good quality Samsung eMMC 5.1 MLC NAND technology.
We are still selling it.

According to your CSD information, your eMMC module looks like a new one.
Device life time estimation type A: life time estimation for SLC eraseblocks, provided in steps of 10%, e.g.:
0x01 means 0%-10% device life time used.
Device life time estimation type B: life time estimation for MLC eraseblocks, provided in steps of 10%, e.g.:
0x01 means 0%-10% device life time used.
Pre EOL information: overall status for reserved blocks. Possible values are:
0x01 - Normal: consumed less than 80% of the reserved blocks.
0x02 - Warning: consumed 80% of the reserved blocks.
0x03 - Urgent: consumed 90% of the reserved blocks.

But, dmesg outputs say there mus be something wrong with eMMC interface or eMMC storage device or file system.
To narrow down root causes, please try freshly flashing the latest XU4 Ubuntu 20.04 + Kernel 5.4 image.

If you get physically to it, you may need to pop the emmc, clean out dust (though I doubt it's dust) and try reseating it...

The physical connection seems to be damaged.
As @mad_ady mentioned, try cleaning the eMMC connectors on the XU4 as well as the eMMC.
Or, just re-connecting/seating might solve the problem.

Will do. Unit is an hours travel away from me at the moment, and housed in a rather complex assembly. It *appears* that my replacement HW order will be here much earlier than I had expected, so I may just wait and stage a full replacement unit before making the trip.

I'd like to get the original down on my bench in the lab for further troubleshooting.

Replacement unit has finally arrived, so I'm working on prepping it as a replacement unit for the next time I visit the site. One thing I *have* noticed the last time I had someone there to check, is that it appears the step-down switching regulator (12VDC > 5VDC) may have drifted over time since its initial deployment. I had them meter the output of this regulator that feeds the ODroid, and it clocks in 5.35VDC, which _is_ technically above the stated range of 4.8 to 5.2 VDC. I don't think I would have set the tuning pot for it to be this high, but I do try to get close to something like 5.1VDC. Perhaps I'll revisit the output of this power-rail when I visit with the replacement.

FYI - can confirm this was absolutely the case. After carefully removing the suspect odroid and evaluating it, everything *appeared* physically okay. However, when I use my hand to 'pinch' the eMMC connector, I most definitely felt the telltale subtle 'click' of the connector reseating properly.

I have it on the bench here now (as I replaced everything anyway in the end system), and I'm going to see if I can recreate... but it certainly seems like this was just a case of thermal chip-creep or vibration unseating the eMMC module.

I definitely do not fault hardkernel, and have already added a dab of hotglue on the replacement setup to hopefully prevent a recurrence.
