[SOLVED] Editing boot.ini for RetroPie

Post by rgmmagma »

Hello I am pretty new to this so please have some patience with me. I previously installed retropie on the odroid xu4 and I think i made a mistake in installation and so I am doing a clean reinstall. I am following this guide::https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Odroid-XU3-XU4/. I need help with how to properly edit /media/boot/boot.ini in order to add this text properly:
setenv RetroPie "no_console_suspend consoleblank=0"

# --- CPU Governor Setup ---
# Uncomment only one line. New governor is set after 90secs after boot.
# ------------------------------------------
# - Performance (Keep all the CPU's at Maximum frequency)
# setenv governor "performance"
# ------------------------------------------
# - Ondemand (recommended)
setenv governor "ondemand"

Normally, we've used 'vi' editor on the Linux command line to edit a text file.
Googling 'how to use vi editor' will give you tons of guides.

If you think it is too hard to learn, try a pre-made retropie based OS image for ODROID-XU4.

Sorry let me specify what I was asking. I know how to edit files what I'm asking is, when I get to this screen in /media/boot/boot.ini, how should I add the text that the guide wants me to add?

Once you add setenv RetroPie "no_console_suspend consoleblank=0" in the file, add ${RetroPie} in bootargs string too.
https://github.com/mdrjr/5422_bootini/b ... t.ini#L244

To confirm your work, look into "dmesg" output Kernel parameter section after booting.

Like this?
# final boot args
setenv bootargs
setenv RetroPie "no_console_suspend consoleblank=0"

# --- CPU Governor Setup ---
# Uncomment only one line. New governor is set after 90secs after boot.
# ------------------------------------------
# - Performance (Keep all the CPU's at Maximum frequency)
# setenv governor "performance"
# ------------------------------------------
# - Ondemand (recommended)
setenv governor "ondemand"

"${bootrootfs} ${videoconfig} smsc95xx.macaddr=${macaddr} governor=${governor} ${hdmi_phy_control} ${hid_quirks}"

Where do I put the ${RetroPie} string?

You can put it any where in the string.
It will be something like this.

Code: Select all

# final boot args
setenv bootargs "${bootrootfs} ${videoconfig} smsc95xx.macaddr=${macaddr} governor=${governor} ${hdmi_phy_control} ${hid_quirks} ${RetroPie}"

# --- CPU Governor Setup ---
# Uncomment only one line. New governor is set after 90secs after boot.
# ------------------------------------------

# setenv governor "performance"
# ------------------------------------------
# - Ondemand (recommended)
setenv governor "ondemand"
setenv bootargs "${bootrootfs} ${videoconfig} smsc95xx.macaddr=${macaddr} governor=${governor} ${hdmi_phy_control} ${hid_quirks} ${RetroPie}"

It looks fine.

After booting the system, look into the kernel parameter with "dmesg" command via remote ssh console.
You can check if the new parameter exists or not.
It will be something like this.

Code: Select all

[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=tty1 console=ttySAC2,115200n8 root=UUID=e139ce78-9841-40fe-8823-96a304a09859 rootwait ro fsck.repair=yes net.ifnames=0 HPD=true vout=hdmi usbhid.quirks=0x0eef:0x0005:0x0004 smsc95xx.macaddr=00:1e:06:61:7a:39 false s5p_mfc.mem=16M
