HC2 with 7200 rpm hdd

Post by skorenjak » Mon May 18, 2020 10:15 pm

Hey, does anyone have experience with 7200 rpm hdds in HC2 – are there any issues regarding heat or power supply?

We tested WD 2.5inch 1TB Black 7200rpm HDD via our USB-to-SATA bridge board and it worked fine with the official 5V/4A PSU.
Many other 3.5inch 7200rpm HDD enclosures also worked well with a separated PSU.

Please let me check if I understand you correctly: In order to utilize my current 3.5 inch 7200 HDD as the main HC2 HDD I need an additional enclosure, separated PSU and a SATA cable to connect it to HC2 (and it is in vain that I have to purchase the (HC2) case)?
(Or were you talking about USB external drives only and my concerns are absurd?)

My answer was for the XU4 board. Sorry.
We could use a few different 7200rpm 3.5inch HDDs on the HC2 with a stock 12V/2A PSU.

If you have a specific model, let's look into the specification to double check the power capability.

I'm asking because say Seagate Ironwolf NAS 4Tb (5900 rpm) has 4.8/3,95 W (idle/average power consumption) whereas Seagate IronwolfPro NAS 4Tb (7200 rpm) has 4.5/7,5 W (idle/average power consumption).

Mine is (unfortunately, sic!) Seagate IronwolfPro NAS 4Tb. Would another PSU (say 12V/3A) resolve the issue?

The official PSU has 24Watt output and HC2 consumes up to 12Watt while the average must be around 7~8Watt.
Do you know the peak power consumption of the IronwolfPro?

This is the data-sheet: https://www.seagate.com/www-content/pro ... 44774g.pdf
See pg. 11 and 12. I'm not quite sure how to interpret the data.
As far as I'm concerned power consumption at spinup is similar to other 5200 rpm HDDS (2A@12V vs 1.8A@12V).

That peak current seems to be quite high.
We will test an IronWolf Pro 12TB by early next week with 12V/2A as well as 12V/3A PSUs.

Hi.

I have tested with HC2 and IronWolf Pro 12TB HDD. I plugged our 12V/2A power adapter which is on sale on our website for the test.
At first, I did cold-boot and warm-boot about 5 times respectively. It could recognize the attached 12TB HDD all the time. There's short freezing during the boot sequence but it is not a problem. I think this is by the spinning-up of the HDD.
Then I tried out iozone test to check its stability/performance simply. More than 5 times. It looks stable, keeps constant results. No issues on dmesg.

iozone -e -I -a -s 100M -r 4k -r 16k -r 512k -r 1024k -r 16384k -i 0 -i 1 -i 2

Code: Select all

                                                             random random bkwd record stride
kB reclen write rewrite read reread read write read rewrite read fwrite frewrite fread freread
         102400 4 19985 24150 27138 27361 18595 4171
         102400 16 55866 66460 75918 78152 39690 16665
         102400 512 216255 227935 207450 214954 90007 146731
         102400 1024 216326 205183 231959 250763 104615 152996

Local write performance was 180~200MB/sec and read performance was 220~240MB/sec.

Thank you for the test. What is the model number of the 12 TB HDD?
I'm asking as there is a bit of confusion in the Seagate IronWolf Pro lineup:
https://www.seagate.com/www-content/dat ... -en_US.pdf

Say there are two 4TB models (ST4000NE001 and ST4000NE0025) one with 5.5W/9.0W (avg. idle/operating power) vs. 5.45W/8.5W respectively.
In any case the 12TB model's power consumption is somewhat lower 5.0W/7.8W (avg. idle/operating power).

Anyhow. I think I'll go for your 12V/2A power adapter from the website and later seek a new solution if needed. (Just in case: do you think 12V/3A power adapter would affect (overload) the HC2 board?)

There should be no negative side effect by larger output current if the output voltage is always stable at 12V.
