3.5 HDD not spinning up

Unread post by othermexx@posteo.de » Sat Mar 21, 2020 7:03 am

Hello,

the original sata and power cable are out of stock, so i used similar cables. I tested different HDDs but all of them did not spin up. I measured the voltage on pin 1 and 4 of the power header, it seems to be ok. What could be the problem?
Only a chance to power on the HDDs with the original cable?

Thanks

There's a thread around about making your own power cables, search for it.

Thank you for your reply. I know the thread. I have assembled a cable myself, i measured the voltage on the sata connector, it was ok (12V and 5V). I tested two HDDs (
Seagate IronWolf 8 TB, WD red 2TB), no one is spinning up. I used the original power adapter, i also tested a 19V power adapter from a notebook, the result is always the same.

Measure the voltage +12VDC and +5VDC rails on the other side.

I have measured the rails with my analog voltmeter. On rails 13-15 i measured a little more than +12VDC, on rails 7-9 i measured between +5 to +6VDC. I've also a second H2. This shows the same problem.

Power connection looks fine.
Can you see any SATA or HDD information on the BIOS screen?

No information about SATA or HDD is shown. SATA Port 0 and 1 are shown as not installed.

Yes, it looks same.
And I can't find what's wrong with your configuration.
Please reset the BIOS settings by disconnecting the backup battery and DC-plug for 10~20 minutes just in case.

BTW, did you buy your H2 board from Pollin? or from our e-store directly?

I think new H2 production batch and SATA cables will be available in May.
At that time frame, please try the official cables or request a replacement of your H2 board to Pollin.

Maybe the connectors he's using don't have the metal prongs long enough to make good contact with the pins. It might be worth to check continuity between the solder points of the connector pins on the board and the other end of the cable.
