RT5572 Instability

Unread post by odroid-wan » Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:56 am

I've got a USB wifi dongle with RT5572 chip. I'm running on ubuntu 18.04 which appears to use the rt2800usb and rt2x00usb modules. I'm able to connect fine and connection is strong. Then after ~4.5 hours, all traffic will stop. According to the OS, wlan0 is still connected with an IP, no messages in syslog, just all traffic starts timing out. If I bring networking down and back up, it works for another 4.5 hours. This seems like power savings to me, so I set wifi.powersave = 2 and rebooted, but no change.

I've read around about other realtek chipsets requiring various patches to get the driver stable. So I'm wondering if I just have crap hardware (I can't remember where I got this device) or a bad driver. The usb module is plugged into the OTG port on the C2 which is using a powered usb hub.

Can you find a clue in dmesg or syslog when you meet the disconnecting problem?
Do you use 5Ghz connection? or 2.4Ghz?

This one is very innocuous, no dmesg or syslog entries when I see that the address is not responding to pings. If I leave the system up, network will sometimes come back 6 hours later. The system is running as idle as a stock unbutu install can be.

I just tried replacing the wifi adapter with a RTL8188CUS and dropped the connection rate to 2.4 GHz band. It was on auto so I assume it was connecting at 5 GHz before.

I think I have damaged this board. I was going back through documentation and realized that I had never removed the jumper and I've had power plugged in and a usb powered hub on this guy simultaneously. This might explain the odd issues with USB instability. I have other C2's that have uptimes of over a year, I think I'm going to trash this one.

Sorry to hear that. :(
If 5Volt rail was not stable, the USB device couldn't work stably.
It seems to be a root cause.
