Prepping microsd cards in anticipation of the arrival of my OGA :)

Unread post by shareef » Sat Feb 15, 2020 4:12 am

My unit has shipped and I am now anxiously awaiting for it to arrive :) !! I'd like to prep a few microsd cards with various images i.e. ubuntu, batocera, retroarena, etc. so I can test the different versions. My question is, if I burn any of these images now and I don't have my OGA yet, can I still copy roms to the microsd card after burning the image or would I need to first boot the image in the OGA, and let it expand the filesystem and set itself up first? I have a linux laptop so can easily mount the microsd card to write to it, but just wasn't sure if it needs to booted at least once first before copying roms to it.

It autoexpands on first boot, but you can expand it yourself on the linux laptop with gparted.

Ah yes, great point, that's easy enough to do. That wouldn't confuse things in anyway would it? I guess if the system sees there's no need to expand on first boot (if it was manually expanded ahead of time) then it simply skips that step and continues booting?

No, it expands it anyway, but it's harmless if it's expanded. Actually you'd worry if you read the /aafirstboot script. It deletes the partition and recreates it :D

So I flashed my first image (batocera) on a 64gb microsd card but did not see /aafirstboot file on root, maybe that only applies to the ubuntu image or another image? Anyway, I can see the 2 partitions that were created as well as the large unallocated space that I need to expand the ext4 (SHARE) partition to:

There is data in the BATOCERA partition:

But I don't see any data or folders at all in the SHARE partition:

I was expecting a roms folder on one of these partitions where I would be copying all my roms to. Does this folder get created after first boot or can I just create it manually (which partition?) and copy my roms to it before first boot? I'm worried it may get overwritten or corrupted if I create it myself and copy roms to it before first boot. Maybe this is all different with the ubuntu image, I'll try that next on another microsd card :)

I answered my own question . After burning the ubuntu image, I see a partition with a roms folder:

I think I'll stick to prepping this image ahead of time first and work on the other images later after I have my OGA in hand.

@mad_dy I'm curious, which image were you referring to re. /aafirstboot? I've burned both reference and batocera images and neither have a /aafirstboot file. Not sure if the file isn't visible because I'm viewing the contents of each microsd card attached to a reader on my linux machine?

It should be on the reference image, but it gets deleted after first boot. Flash the image and mount it on a pc and you'll see it in the rootfs

Ah gotcha. I just finished building my unit and frankly I'm way too excited to get it all set up and configured perfectly lol! It's gonna be a late night! :D
