PXE boot questions

Unread post by o_lampe » Tue Jan 21, 2020 8:55 pm

Hi folks,
I read the article about wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/application_note/software/pxe_boot but still have a few questions:

From what I understood, I have a `server`-copy of the worker-image in the PXE-server directory /var/lib/tftpboot/odroidxu4/?
What if I make any updates/addons to this folder? Will it automatically transfer these changes to all workers? Do I have to power-cycle the workers to get the changes?

How does PXE work with Docker? (it sounds, like I don't need Docker anymore ?)
Which one is the smarter aproach?

The changes in the directory only affect after power-cycle since they are Linux kernel and ramdisk. Docker does not require to do the power cycle but it also needs to restart the Docker container and you will need a Docker registry (private or public) that can be accessed by your XU4s, the Docker container in XU4 downloads and load. IMO, PXE would be a good option if you need to update the kernel frequently or prefer to run a native server while the Docker is good to provide software services.

Thanks @tobetter
now I understand. PXE is for OS setup and service, but it doesn't work for applications.
I'd have to use pssh to install apps on all workers or use Docker containers.
