[MC1] re-use unused USB3 port

Unread post by o_lampe » Thu Jan 02, 2020 6:18 pm

The SATA port on MC1 is not populated. Could we solder a USB-extension cable to the appropriate pads and get the unsused USB3 port running again?
If so, which OS-image would it take?( XU4 or Docker swarm)
Or would it be found automatically?

Thanks in advance
Olaf

It seems to be possible if your soldering skill is good enough.
You can find a USB 3.0 root host in "lsusb" and "lsusb -t" outputs without modifying system software.

Before soldering/wiring, show us your connection diagram or sketch to minimize risks.
Note that USB 3.0 signals are very fast(2.5Ghz/5Gbps), you have to use good wires with shield.

Thanks @odriod for encouraging me!
The pins required to solder an USB3.0 type A cable are all on the same side of the QFN48 footprint.
Pretty tight space, but doable with laquered single strand wire (for professionals )

QFN48 pin: USB-A pin and color:
13 Data- 2 white
15 Data+ 3 green
19 SSTX- 8 violet
20 SSTX+ 9 orange
22 SSRX- 5 blue
23 SSRX+ 6 yellow

Vbus and GND might be better to connect them to the bigger pads of the SATA connector.

At 9$ for an MC1 solo, it's worth a try I'd say?

@ o_lampe,
i would be really interested in how you are getting on with this project
i was thinking of soldering the sata bridge and connector on the mc1 solo, but reclaiming the USB3 is probably a better idea

PS wanted to PM you but i couldn't, just joined the forum... sorry about this

thanks
M

@o_lampe make sure you take pictures and document your steps. Others might benefit from it as well.

I will, but I'm not sure, if that would help hardkernel selling HC1/HC2 :(

I doubt a lot of people have the skill/time to pull it off. But it's a cool "hack".

I found a USB3.extension cable, that is ideal for my experiment. I can fix the connector and thereby keep the solderjob tension-free.
