ODROID-N2 received and no HDMI working

Unread post by ricargr » Tue Dec 31, 2019 4:26 pm

Hi, yesterday I received a odroid-n2 and hdmi port doesnt work. I tried with 2 different psu 12v 2A. Also in 2 diferrent monitor/tv

I can connect by ssh to the odroid, but no hdmi image. I also tried with all the images you have in the web. And 2 different sdhc’s.

I think it is defective, do you have any idea?

What is the native resolution of your display device?
Are you running this OS image via SSH?

Can you try other HDMI cables or TVs to narrow down root causes?
Also change the slide switch position to "MMC" instead of "SPI".

We will let you know how to check the HDMI status via SSH commands if those suggestions are not helpful.

If you bought it with the 4 weeks "warranty", I suggest you apply for a return asap, before it expires.

That's something you'll need to ask the vendor you bought if from. Did you buy it directly from HK?

Hi @ricargr,
Before we discuss returning it back, can you check the followings to narrow a real cause of no display issue? :)
Let's check monitor compatibility or another points first.
You can check them via ssh.
For this, please use ubuntu image until we find a real cause.

1. Check hdmi status
Could you check these factors and share the results?

Code: Select all

root@odroid:~# cat /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/disp_cap

(an example result)
480p60hz
576p50hz
720p60hz
1080i60hz
1080p60hz
720p50hz
1080i50hz
1080p50hz

Code: Select all

root@odroid:~# cat /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/preferred_mode

(an example result)
1080p60hz

Code: Select all

root@odroid:~# cat /sys/class/amhdmitx/amhdmitx0/rawedid

(an example result)
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

2. Share debug files
You can find two debug files in the vfat filesystem of your card.
- edid.bin
- display.bin
Could you share the files here as an attachment?

3. Check if HDMI hw is broken
Do you have a DMM (Digital Multi-Meter)?
If so, can you check resistance value between part L8 (or L9) and GND.
( You can refer to an example of hw check in this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=181&t=35764&p=263738&hilit=dmm#p263738 )

* note: remove the board power.
Before you measure it, turn off your board and remove whole power.

You should have several-M ohm if hdmi block is OK of your board. ex) 5M ohm
If hdmi block is broken, the value may be measured as k-ohm or fewer.

And for the point 3 i need to be at my home. In some hours I send you results

@ricargr,
Thank you for sharing the information.
As I checked your data, there is no special check point to try.
It's a very common 1080p60hz timing.

So, please check the hdmi hw as the point 3 when you're available.
Very sorry for the inconvenience.

And to make sure, can I ask one more?
Do you have two N2 boards? and both of two have this display issue?

I have only one board, and in my case it never worked (I have read some cases where they worked for some weeks and alter they failed)
Not at home yet, later I send you the info about point 3.

I have the results for the 3rd point;

Resistance between L8 and ground = 202 k ohm
Resistance between L9 and ground = 34 k ohm

@ricargr,
Thank you for checking it.
Based on the result, it looks HDMI block of cpu is broken.

Please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this thread.
Then, they will help your RMA process including ways how to pay the shipping for returning and new shipment.
If you purchased the board from your local distributor/reseller, please contact them.

Really sorry for the inconvenience.
We will make a close investigation for this issue.

Is this check effective to determine partially working HDMI too?
In my case 4K would not play at all (no signal). I since locked it into 1080p which does display...most of the time. It literally acting differently every time I start it (with CEC):

Sometimes no signal.
Sometimes screen goes on and off (display to black screen to display to black screen and so on)
Sometimes constant audio drops.
Sometimes white snow noise on display.

Hi pherrmann,
I don't think so.
When HDMI block is broken, no signal is detected even with lower resolution like 1080p60hz.

OK, thanks. I thought maybe it also possible to assess the signal on the pins too.
I don't know enough about HDMI to tell if it can partially work.

I've manually added all 1080 options (23.978-60) on Kodi's whitelist, so it won't attempt to play 4K as that results in signal loss. This way it downscales it to 1080. However, I don't watch that
much 4K content, but mostly 1080, so this should not be the issue. The port just appears to be not fully functional.
I got a different device now (not N2) and there is no issue with any resolution (at least for now), so this has to be a hardware issue.
I was trying to figure out if there is a test like the one you suggested, that I can do on my own to determine if it's worth trying to RMA it. As the warranty was only 4 weeks, there is little point to send back something that can't be fixed.

Hi @pherrmann,
Thank you for sharing the information and so sorry for late response.

[1] Display Manual Mode
You mean you've tried manual display modes by adjusting boot.ini, right?

Code: Select all

setenv display_autodetect "false"
setenv hdmimode "1080p60hz"
https://github.com/mdrjr/n2_bootini/blo ... oot.ini#L7
https://github.com/mdrjr/n2_bootini/blo ... ot.ini#L50

And please check normal operations without KODI to make sure this issue is related to only HDMI.

[2] HDMI timing of your monitor
And also check what display.bin says.
You can find these files in vfat file system of your card.
(if ubuntu, /media/boot/edid.bin & display.bin)
- edid.bin
- display.bin
Could you share the files here as *.zip files?

If you mean you lost hdmi signal sometimes even when you set as 1080p60hz with manual display mode, it looks your assumption is reasonable and it can be hdmi hw issue.
But, honestly, I've never seen this kind of issue patterns that a part of hdmi ports is broken so I can't image how it works. :(
So let's check if there is any sw problem during timing setup process.

Not really this way.
Kodi has a whitelist option in System/Display: https://i.imgur.com/etqouAz.jpg
Usually it's blank, but you can enable certain resolutions only as well. Since the signal drop when I try to play any sort of 4K, I chose ALL the 1080 resolutions (from 23.978 to 60). This way, if I attempt to play 4K it will downscale it as 1080, and signal isn't lost. But it wasn't very stable. As I detailed I had a lot of various behaviors. But at least I could watch eventually in 1080p.

I posted some edid info here: viewtopic.php?f=181&t=37119#p275482
I'm not sure if this is exactly the info you needed.

Meanwhile I bought a different device that seems to work fine. N2 have been disconnected and placed back in it's box. If I find the motivation to take it out again, I can have a look at what you suggested to check.
I bought it specifically for 4K playback, as it proved to be too much effort to get it working under windows. For 1080p I don't really need it, I can go back to using my windows box.

thanks.
