Custom buttons and cases

Unread post by aukondk » Mon Dec 30, 2019 9:04 am

Looks like the buttons have a similar mold to the original Go so probably can fit replacement buttons intended for the GBC. retromodding.com has the d-pads, buttons and silicone "start/select" pads. Only problem is most of them will have only A and B printed on them and the shoulder buttons look bespoke for the GoA.

The transparent case will once again be great for painting the inside. I never saw anyone do a 3d printable replacement case though for solid colour.

Coloured buttons would be great (especially those that ape the SNES rainbow colours)

I dislike the clear casing, personally.

It's easy to paint from the inside, but some premade color choices would be nice.

The case is very simple, I'm sure we will be seeing some 3D printed cases soon after launch. Only the holes that hold the shoulder buttons has any complexity, I'm sure Hardkernel will release the files for the case that will help with printing.

I was thinking about doing an internal paint, actually. But, if I'm showing off software I've made for it on Twitter, I'd want it to look like the stock device so people know what they're looking at. I'm sure I'd muck it up.

I posted this in a General Topics when it should have been posted here ...

I did think of one hardware "mod" request ... The Gamepad ABXY buttons ... is there any recommendations (other than using a Sharpie pen) for labeling the buttons. This handheld will have the following buttons emulator layouts used:

B A : NES, GB/GBC
Y X, B A : SNES, GameCube
X Y Z, A B C : Sega, while Dreamcast (&Xbox) lack the Z & C. The bumpers could be mapped to the Z & C for Sega games.
Square Triangle, X Circle : PSX, PSP

It would super sweet if there was a community (or odroid) suggestion / recommendation. If the buttons are embossed SNES style, possibly offer to sell a set in PSP style if enough folks request them.

One thought that crossed my mind is to have the PSX/PSP symbols printed on a transparent cellophane "overhead" sheet, then cut it to fit and place it inside of the case so I have both SNES & PSP style. Or sell one directly made by HardKernel. That only works though if you maintain a clear case (like I do).
(controller pics at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamepad)

Thoughts? Cheers, MG

The easiest thing would probably be blank physical buttons but onscreen overlays for each emulator that remind you of button layouts.

ETAPrime on youtube painted and replaced buttons, using Gameboy Pocket buttons with some trimming.

Yeah kinda wish we could get some proper solid colours, not a fan of translucent stuff.

HARdKERNEL will hopefully start offering coloured cases and buttons.

I see ETA Primes video on painting, thought it still looked quite crap tbh (all mounting posts etc still visible).

There won't likely be colored buttons or cases from Hardkernel, if you want this you could get something 3D printed.

Layers... Layers will be everywhere.
We need a method to make HK interested in this. :P He is the only molds overlord.
At least translucent BLACK would be an excellent option.

They do look tall in his video, nice review of them. Look good but don't play good.
