HC1 not booting - red led, blinking green led, no blue led

Unread post by hascc » Mon Sep 02, 2019 10:00 pm

Hello!

A couple of days ago, my HC1 (which I've been using as a cheap NAS/gateway solution for a couple of years) stopped working.

I've removed its hard disk, change its SDcard for a fresh one, and even tried to boot without any SDcard, just for kicks. It didn't work, no serial output either. And if you put your ear very close, you can hear a noise not unlike an old hard disk drive failing.

BTW, the PSU it came with is the 5V/4A kind.

Flash this OS image with Etcher and try to boot your HC1 with the SD card. Don't connect the HDD.

And let me know the status of the red and blue LEDs on the HC1 board.

Hello, I was busy so the tests had to wait.

Let's see:
* I got the "minimal" image, flashed to SD and tried to boot (no HDD on). It didn't boot, no serial activity, red led on, green led blinking, no blue led.

* Then I found something about XU4 needing more amps as time passes, so I rigged an ATX PSU to get a 5V/+4A supply. Then my HC1 booted.
Got serial activity, red led on, green led on, blue led on.

* But the boot process always stopped at "Starting the kernel", then rebooted. Again and again. Tried that "minimal" image and some Armbian flavors too.

* Checking the amperage I found the SBC pulled 5 amps initially, but right when the kernel started booting it pulled almost 10 amps. I wonder if that's a bad thing

Consider using thick(18-gauge) and reliable power wires to reduce any possible voltage drop spikes.
