Armbian Vs Ubuntu

Post by ManuelFantoni »

HI,

for a few tests I installed Armbian and then went back to Ubuntu.

With Armbian Odroid N2 it seemed much slower than Ubuntu, was it just me or did Armbian perform less? or do you need to make any settings?

thank you
Manuel

mainline linux has about 1/2 the speed of the HK build, reportedly due to incorrect clock speed settings.

Armbian on Odroid N2 is almost identical in low level features (u-boot / kernel) so there could not be any speed difference while Armbian optimizations should give you some speed-up, not speed down. XFCE desktop is as light as MATE.

Your claim is near to impossible. How exactly did you compare? Can you provide some numbers?

We don't provide mainline experience yet for this board. Its too soon.

Hi Igorpec,

I didn't take measurements, I tried to start some programs and I got this feeling, as soon as I can reinstall Armbian and do more in-depth tests

thanks

Armbian should run noticeable faster, but of course unattended handbrake could be hidden somewhere ... we use such information (backed with real data) to improve things. If possible.

Hi Igorpec,

last night I installed armbian. I configured the CPU clock to maximum and did some tests. I found the slowness in Synaptics, I think it's slower, and if I do a search it doesn't work.

Yes, (only) that particular application is slower due to their bug which doesn't know how to handle with our optimizations (storing compressed index file). Here is an explanation and solution:

Could it be your Ubuntu was on the eMMC and Armbian on an SD-card? Just asking?
I find armbian performing great.

Hi BadPritt,
I just used the same SD card after formatting it.

thanks
Manuel

I can confirm this as my experience with ARMbian (Stretch) on the N2 has been great too in terms of performance.
Flashed it on the SD card for a couple of weeks and used it as a desktop while my PC's mainboard was on RMA.

Now I'm back to my Debian Buster install (OMV5, pi-hole, qbt, flexget, jackett, ... tweaks) on the eMMC, which I had to tune quite a bit to do well.
Only thing that held me back from redoing all of it when going back to it was that there was no ARMbian Buster image available yet (about 1-2 weeks after it was not "testing" anymore).

@igorpec:
I can see there is a Buster image now on https://dl.armbian.com/odroidn2
Is it mature enough to give it a go in your opinion? I'm asking because it is not listed on the ARMbian - Odroid N2 page

Armbian Buster is matured (the same as upstream), but OMV5 is not. Last time we tried to install it, it was a bunch of troubles. You either proceed with Stretch or wait that OMV5 gets properly fixed. Problem is out of our power to fix.
