[SOLVED] HK USB GNSS Receiver not working

Unread post by FntX » Tue Jul 09, 2019 2:18 am

UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED. SEE
https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/conne ... #odroid-n2

The USB GNSS receiver doesn't work on Android. It seems like it isn't recognized at all. At least I couldn't see any reference in lsusb and no hint on lsmod or I am just plain blind...
The location icon is popping up but it doesn't get a fix.

It is working however on my PC so there's no fault on the receiver side.

Any ideas?

Can you check if other USB devices like a mouse or a keyboard can work on it?

Are you using the latest Android build? There was a bug in earlier versions where the GPS time was returned incorrectly which meant some applications would not get a lock. But this has been fixed in the last few versions.

Can you check the NMEA outputs with cat /dev/ttyUSB0 or cat /dev/ttyACM0 on the Android terminal or ADB shell?

Interface looks fine at least.

Did you place the GPS receiver on a fully open space?
The USB type GPS mouse has a poorer RF reception than a modern smartphone relatively.

Try this type of app to monitor the satellite signal strength.

It is mounted beneath the roof. I also placed it under open sky to no avail.
The suggested app doesn't work but waze gets a fix and also gnss commander works.
I get the feeling that something with the configuration of the mouse is wrong

Any news on this topic?
I double checked everything and can confirm that nothing works except when using "gnss commander" as middleware.

Also one noteworthy thing: on specific USB ports it does not work at all. This is also true for the Bluetooth receiver.

Could you show me a screenshot of GPS Test app?

The GPS test app just sits there with "no fix" no matter how long I wait...

Could you post the configuration dump of your receiver please?
I have a strong feeling that something is misconfigured on mine...

Hi FntX

Can you try this to understand is this GPS HAL problem ?
viewtopic.php?f=178&t=35690

This build is using different GPS HAL lib.
Please read second post how to configure GPS.

I'm currently not able to flash another image.

After searching for the problem I encountered several hints and found the following :

Code: Select all

ro.kernel.android.gps=/dev/ttyACM0
ro.kernel.android.gps.speed=9600
Was missing from build.prop

The message "NMEA unknown message*46" can be suppressed by:

Code: Select all

stty - F /dev/ttyACM0 - echo
After that I get a clean and steady stream of GPS data on /dev/ttyACM0

But still it doesn't work.

EDIT:
Although the max_rate parameter is set, the frequency doesn't change as if the build.prop file is not processed.
Ublox center enumerates the mouse as /dev/bus/usb/001/006
After connecting to this device, ttyACM0 disappears and comes back after reboot but data flows at the desired rate inside this app.

GPS test in the meantime does not get any data.

I conclude that the system doesn't know where to fetch the GPS data from since the specialised apps, like gnss commander which connect directly to the manually selected device, do get data and fix.

So where is the configuration that dictates which device to use for GPS?

Do you use our GPS module?
https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/usb-gps-module/
If yes, it should work out of the box on our latest Android build.

Did you place the GPS module on the dash board? or roof on your car?
Try to place the module on the roof and wait 10~20 minutes to recover the RF cold-boot problem.

Yes I'm using this exact module. I will update the system today and report back if it helped.

I performed the update but it still refuses to work.

After that I did a full factory reset on the receiver, placed it under open sky and preformed another check with the laptop and ublox software.

Back on the odroid it still didn't work.

If there aren't any further ideas or hints I'll flash the latest image and start from scratch...

How many satellites were available when you tested the receiver with your laptop?

Yes, please freshly flash this latest OS image.

Hi,
i have the same gps module (not from HK) and working out of the box.
I also using in my car , working perfect without any settings.
Do you have other usb devices connected , try to disconnect them when you testing gps.

I had more than 20 sats in sight and 12 locked.

Because I seem to be the only one with this issue I will start from scratch.

Thanks for the help so far πŸ˜€

Re: HK USB GNSS Receiver not working

Unread post by FntX » Mon Jul 22, 2019 3:54 pm

After further investigation (I'm about to regret my decision for choosing the N2...) I've found several discrepancies between the product on the shop, the OS configuration and even inside the shop description.

So let's start at the gps mouse itself:
I've verified that it is a Ublox 8 (or M8) receiver device id 01A8 but on the default.prop it is configured as 01A7 which is the Ublox 7 chipset. The build.prop file doesn't contain any gps configuration which is unusual. Adding the missing information doesn't change anything.
This made me wonder what the shop description said.
This is the Shop description:
USB GPS Module
Works with C1 / U3 / XU3 / XU4 / C2 Android and Ubuntu OS.

Upgraded to Ublox G7020-KT chipset with a patch antenna
50-channel u-blox 6 engine
*)Nope. It's an Ublox 8 device and it has 32 channels. Therefore several combinations of nav systems can't be enabled.
GPS L1 C/A code (GLONASS mode is disabled permanently) *)Nope. Galileo, Beidou and IMES are disabled. Galileo can be enabled but it doesn't work which is bad over here in Europe. At least GLONASS works like a charm
SBAS: WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS

Interface: USB ( /dev/ttyACM0, USB VID:PID 1546:01A7 U-Blox AG ) *)Nope. It's device id is 01A8
GPS Protocol : NMEA 0183 position, velocity, altitude, status and control
Power rate : 100mA at 5Volt
Either the description is just outdated or I received the wrong receiver. Or HK received a batch of new devices with a new chip and they didn't know. Either way I'm currently stuck with a more or less useless device and it appears to me as if there is little to none knowledge why it doesn't work as advertised in my case even if I can verify that the receiver itself is working properly on windows, linux and android only with a special app.
Ublox itself says that native support for devices starting with version 6 is included within Linux since a certain kernel version and should work right away. They even state that there is no dedicated driver needed to use their receivers on android. they even show it in their installation document. I'm really wondering now what is going wrong.

This is really frustrating.

Also, the ttyACM0 file is not properly configured and echoes. It should be initialized with

Code: Select all

stty -F /dev/ttyACM0 -echo
to prevent flooding with the message

Code: Select all

NMEA unknown message*46

Please clarify.

Thanks.

@FntX, Thank you for your investigation.

We've acknowledged that very recent batch of stock was shipped with revised PID 01A8 which is different from the Hardkernel product page you've found. In order to make your GPS module work, you need a change on your Android device with the current Android release, in which to replace 01A7 to 01A8 in the file /odm/default.prop. Once you've changed the file and reboot, I believe your GPS would work. For the same, we've quickly updated the Wiki.

From the next Android release, both GPS modules with 1546:01A7 and 1546:01A8 would be supported by default.

Really sorry about the inconvenience.

Thank you very much. With this tweak it is working now. I don't get a fix yet (9 in sight, which is poor - usually there are around 20) but I'm almost sure it works now. Be reporting back if it's truly working or just pretending ;)

Thank you for your quick test and glad to know it works. Technically the original problem was getting GPS raw data and it begins to receive, it would work. ;)

No fix in the test app but this is due to the fact that the receiver has the corresponding nmea message disabled.

Navigation is working.

Problem solved, case closed!
