[SOLVED] Setting up WiFi connection

Unread post by 4d617474 » Sat Jun 01, 2019 6:21 pm

Hello,
I have been trying to set up SSH because of EXT4 compatibility issues.
The thing that I have is the WiFi 5a module. I have tried it on both USB3.0 and 2.0 ports - no change.
When connected and logged into X, I click on the network connection menu in the top bar.
I create a new WiFi connection and provide my password under WPA & WPA2 Personal option (any other option?)
I also provide the SSID of my network. The network is router provided.

The network connection bar only shows "enable networking" but there isn't an option such as "enable WiFi" as seen in some screenshots...

What is wrong with this? There is no connection at all.

Run ifconfig -a If you don't see the wifi adapter you may need to install additional package firmware to support it. Run dmesg -w, remove the wifi adapter and reinsert it. Paste here the messages you get from these actions.

ipconfig -a
command not found

I could save the log into somewhere but guess what...
My WiFi doesnt work - no ssh
My Windows system wont read Ext4 files - no access
My Hyper-V Ubuntu wont be able to access usb drives that aren't recognized by Windows

I might want to look for an ethernet cable eh..
Then I could perhaps read the IP address of odroid and access it through the local network >.<

EDIT:
Ethernet cable did work automatically, let me set up PUTTY...

so I have set up SSH, but dmesg -w command never stops working hence I can't save it into a file...
great...

Update:
The correct command is dmesg, because dmesg -w is for waiting... since it goes in an iteration endless loop awaiting for new sys messages.

I have used Hyper-V with XRDP Ubuntu to get enhanced session to be able to share copy/paste to use SSH on odroid to execute dmesg to save it into desktop to later use SFTP to transfer the file into virtual machine Ubuntu to later paste the log from EXT4 to NTFS.
Weee, it worked.
Sounds like fun. DOESN'T IT?

Also try ifconfig -a just to make sure, but looks like the dongle isn't recognized as wifi. Show us uname -a.
If you're on ubuntu 18.04 probably a sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo reboot should do it. If you're on debian you may need to install firmware-realtek.

Oh, I am sorry.
It was my fault. I read that as ipconfig and not "if" config.
ifconfig:

I just performed the update, can't see any difference. WiFi option doesn't appear, any wireless connection neither.

Oh, you're on kernel 3.10. What distro/image are you using? Is the intended purpose retro gaming or not? The XU4 most recent kernel is 4.14. Not sure what is needed for 3.10...

What? O_o
I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu ARM kernel for Xu4Q?
Really? I didn't know.

It's ubuntu 16.04.
I know that there are newer relaeses, but... are there? for xu4q?

PS: I checked the name of my OS
"ubuntu-16.04-mate-odroid-xu4-20170731.img"
It suggests it being outdated. I got it from a wikipedia link. I am checking it out right now and it turns out that there are newer versions.
I don't have any idea how I got this old one. I will try installing the 4.9 one and see whether it helped okay?

Thanks for the info, I didn't think about it. Perhaps a new driver could solve this issue.

Ffs I now understand why I got the old one.
The link says that it provides KERNEL 4.9 NEWEST VERSION OF UBUNTU.
When you click into it, it takes you to a whole repository of all available images.
I downloaded the first one thinking that it was the latest. They all have a very old modification date, so I didn't pay much attention.
This is the most likely the reason for why my kernel is so old. I will download the bottom image and see whether it's the correct one lel.

Anyway, thanks for info. I will check it out and say whether it helped or not.

I just tried running the newest OS and the kernel doesn't load correctly...
It stops at
"random: crng init done"
Nothing else happens next...

It's the mate edition so the environment is installed.

That's some good kernel. After connecting a keyboard it goes into panic mode...

PS: Man, this kernel is fucked.
I read errors like "failed to establish voltage" or
"Turning off CPU3"

I am done with this shit. Im downgrading. If it has issues with establishing voltage or doesn't load correctly then I am not going to risk a CPU smoking due to a hardware bug.

PS2: It turns out that I downloaded the 4.14 version -.-
It was modified the latest, compared to the 4.9 version which wasn't touched at all.
What the hell? Why to touch the older versions?

I downloaded 16.04.03 with 4.14...

Gosh, why is this wikipedia so complicated?
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... inux/start
linux/start - > images ye?

"We don't support Kernel 4.9 any more. Please use the latest 4.14"
what....
I just tried 4.14 out on 16.4.3 and it fails to even load correctly?

I will download ubuntu 18.4. I just realized that "upstream" has the 18.4 to it.
What is a new release to the wiki developers if those images are all 2 years old?
Wth?

Thanks for help. I will check it out.

I just tried out the 18.4...
it seems to be stuck at "mounted filesystem without journal"
Does it usually take that much time (over 5 minutes?) to initliaze?
It went to the point 77.61...

Well. I believe that I tried with Rufus.
I might give it a try with etcher, but tbh, if Rufus always worked and the kernel technically works, but doesn't work due to software bug or improper configuration...
It seems a compiling bug to me.

I already tried 4 OS and the old ubuntu 16.04 I believe and new android both work for me.
Thew 4.14 kernel doesn't fork and either gets stuck or returns some very weird errors when USB devices are connected.

For sake of trying. I can try etcher and Ubuntu 18.04
ubuntu-18.04.1-4.14-mate-odroid-xu4-20181203.img - this is the one that gives me issues

or is there a newer one?

It is the latest OS image for XU4 and don't extract xz file since the Etcher has a proven uncompressor inside.

I verified the MD5 on the image that I used - matching
Used Etcher this time and it booted with information "remounted filesystem mmcblk0p2 : error (something)
It rebooted and correctly ran everything.

I really don't know what caused that first (mounting filesystem without journal) error/freeze. Perhaps rufus didn't unpack the image correctly.
However it would be weird, it did unpack an older Ubuntu image (.xz) and installed that without issues...

I really dont know. WiFi dongle is working now, it is automatically detected and also informs me of my local WiFi network.

Thank you for trying to help me. It seems that something randomly messed up.
I can't really find any explanation for it.
