Big Cores MAX FREQ Settings

Hi All.

I have been trying for quite some days now to overclock the BIG CORES of my Odroid XU4. No madder what I do it seems like the max freq stays at 1.6GHz and is not set to what I specify.

Are the big cores somehow locked to 1.6GHz ?

sudo uname -r

/etc/default/cpufrequtils:

I have tried:

"sudo cpufreq-set -d 1.6GHz -u 1.9GHz -c 7"

This set the min freq speed of the BIG CORES to 1.6GHz but did not touch the max freq speed.

I have also tried changing the governor to "userspace" and "conservative" to check if this would work but without success.

Could the max freq speed of the cores be limited in some config file ? I have no idea of where to look so any help would be very much appreciated.

I've checked the operation today again on XU4,
but in my case, it works as I intended.

I'm using XU4 Ubuntu 18.04 Mate version and kernel version is the latest one.

Everything worked as it should with XU4 Ubuntu 18.04 Mate and as per your description.

It made me curious and I tried working on my initial distrubution/kernel.

What I found out was that when running a CPU heavy program the max CPU FREQ adjusted itself to this:

However, when stopping the CPU heavy program (kill xxx) the MIN FREQ and MAX FREQ were all set as per the /etc/default/cpufrequtils

You found the clue. :)
Yes.
When temperature meets the defined temperature point, operation cpu frequency is adjusted.

And what we need to make sure now is the temperature point.
You said the temperature is 76°C.
Default temperature to start cpu freq throttling is 85°C.
If you put heavy program (especially to CPU), it may takes just few minutes to exceed the threshold, 85°C,
and then current cpu frequency changes to lower one (2.0GHz -> 1.6GHz) because default governor is "performance".

I think monitoring temperature and cpu frequency during stress test can be helpful to confirm the changes.

If your XU4's temperature is over 85 degrees, it makes sense you have this cpufreq info.

But still I don't understand why you have 1.4GHz for little cores.

Hello again.

Thank you so much for the reply and for providing the script.

I have attached some of the counts/results here.

At Count 18 the stresstest is started.

At Count 20 the XU4 is running at MAX FREQ and temperature is 76000.

At Count 56 the XU4 is running at reduced FREQ and temperature is 76000.

At Count 150 the stresstest is stopped.

At Count 154 the XU4 is running at MAX FREQ and temperature is 51000.

It seems like the CPU Temperature will not exceed a temperature of 77000.

I am wondering if perhaps the RAM might be the thottling part? Since the CPU should only throttle when reaching temperature 85000 ?

I have just ordered another XU4 as I would like to double check and see if temperature/throttling issue is the same on a new unit.

I have absolutely no clue of why the XU4 is behaving like this - I am all lost....Sadly...

Hi RealMuhko,
I can reproduce the same pattern with my environment.
In my case, the pattern is shown when I put stress cpus with multi thread at the same time.

Please let me check it more.
I think I miss some important points. :(

Ah... and there is no temperature sensor to measure DDR temperature on exynos5422.
Only for cpus and gpu.
