DWA-171 C1G support

Unread post by undershot » Fri May 17, 2019 7:23 am

I got my Odroid C2 this week, set it up with dietpi, some media server stuff and a VPN, with a view of using it as a router/server.

I've got a Wi-Fi dongle which I've seen a few instruction discussions, a DWA-171 C1G, but when I come to setting it up I come stuck.

From what I can tell, the issue seems to be that the Odroid C2 uses x64 architecture rather than x86.

Does anyone know a solution to get it working? Is it even possible? And if not, what would be a good alternative wifi dongle option with a similar spec?

I've attached a photo of the oungle sticker so you can see more detail of if required.

Thanks :)

Can you confirm the chipset and VID/PID inside? It seems to be RTL8811CU.
It looks very similar to our WiFi module 5A (RTL8811AU chipset).
https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/wifi-module-5a/

If C2 DietPi OS uses our official Kernel 3.16 LTS or meveric's Debian Kernel 3.16, RTL8811AU chipset should work out of the box.
But I have a big concern if RTL8811CU and RTL8811AU might not be compatible each other.

Not sure how I'd do that in linux, but flicking through the adapter properties in Windows, I found this under 'Configuration ID', 'oem51.inf:USB\VID_2001&PID_331D,RTL8811cu.ndi.NT', so looks like RTL8811CU.

Dietpi is as below, based on 'uname -a'
Linux DietPi 3.16.57+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Aug 19 15:27:56 CEST 2018 aarch64 GNU/Linux

If it should work straight out of the box, as you say? Should it not just be a case of plug it in, reboot using 'sudo shutdown -r now', and it be available? Because I've tried this a couple of times already.

Also, using lsusb, my device is 'Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:1a2b Realtek Semiconductor Corp.'

Can you update the kernel with the following commands?

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo reboot
The latest one should be 3.16.65.

If it still doesn't work, 8811CU and 8811AU are not compatible.
In that case, you have to build a proper device driver manually.

I think they didn't sync with meveric's Kernel update packages from last August.
Post a request of kernel update on the DietPi forum.
