n2 no sound using Ubuntu 18.04

Unread post by mivilleb » Sun Apr 14, 2019 11:33 am

Just received my N2 with a eMMC with Ubuntu 18,.04 per-installed. No sound is coming out of the headphone with speakers plug into it.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

No sound coming out when trying this and a video using VLC

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ aplay -D hw:0,1 piano2.wav
Playing WAVE 'piano2.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Stereo
odroid@odroid:~$
Looked at alsamixer and pavucontrol and looks Ok to me.

Tried most thing after Googling, none worked.

Any idea?

re-flash with 03/25 image..here

https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-n2/os_im ... u/20190325

every time you reboot the device ...
you have to go into sound settings from the gui preferences and set your preferred device in the output tab that you want ..restart your browser you tube vlc..etc..etc..and you should have sound...
yes i have brought this issue up but yet nothing has been done about it.that i am aware of...

here if you want to get the SPDIF OPTIC/COAXIAL TX on [pin 7 gpio on the 40 pin header] output working..you have to add some code...

Well I do not have an eMMC reader, so can't reflash to it with the older version of Ubuntu. I can flash to a Micro SD card, but then how do I flash it to the already installed eMMC? Could not find any instruction other than using a eMMC USB reader.

Sound is a pretty basic function, it should just work out of the box, any plan to provide a Ubuntu version that will work? Everybody must be having the same problem, no? Unless I received a bad N2?

if you got an early image which i am not shure that you have ..the link above is the latest..it includes the sound
but you have to configure the optic with a few lines of code..as per the other link i gave you..
and yes the sound preferences may be basic if you have an early version of the software..the newer image has the most sound options.. four there are...

I think I already have the latest image, not sure:

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ uname -a
Linux odroid 4.9.162-22 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Mar 25 12:17:29 -03 2019 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
Description:	Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release:	18.04
Codename:	bionic
* How do I find out exactly what image I have? It came pre-installed.
* How do I flash an image to the eMMC without an eMMC reader, can I do it by booting on an image on a uSD card then flash the eMMC somehow?

* I am just trying to connect speakers using the headphone jack, no optic involved. The speakers work on another computer.

I am using audio jack with hdmi connected. Ubuntu Mate automatically sets up hdmi audio initially and I manually set it to 'Audio Jack' in the volume applet sound settings, under output, after each boot. I haven't mucked around with CLI fixes yet.

You must also restart playing video.

i don't know in how many threads i have posted the fault that after every reboot you have to go in an adjust the output "tab" to what you require.
any way i am shure that H-K will release a new image with soo many issues fixed..when that will be prolly within a month or so i am guessing.....

There is only one choice in the output for sound, no headphone or jack.

The only entry says:

Build-in Audio Stereo
Stereo

Nothing else, same for Hardware.

I can flash to a uSD card, but I do not have an eMMC reader, so how can I flash to the eMMC already instaled directly from the uSD?

I flashed the latest image on a uSD card and booted the N2 from it and sound works perfectly (after changing the default to headphone jack). So I just need to find a way of flashing it to my eMMC without a USB reader.

there are a few thing`s you are going to need to make working with your hardware a lot easier and much less work for yourself ...a serial uart kit would be handy as well

1: usb sd-card reader of some description..... preferred is transend

2: emmc to sd-card adapter..... most odroid suppliers stock these....https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/emmc-mo ... s-upgrade/

3: optional... usb3 emmc adapter most odroid suppliers stock these...https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/usb3-0- ... le-writer/

if you have a high speed usb-3 thumb stick you could flash 0325 Ubuntu image to it ...and run off it via the on-board spi and petitboot ....

Having to pay $16 for shipping for a $1.50 module is kind of ridiculous when HK should have provided from the start a fully working image. If I would have known I would have bought one at the same time as my N2.

What about using this:

https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/m ... ta-install

to flash from a running uSD to emmc.

You can probably do this (but I haven't tested):
1. Attach emmc to the board
2. Flip the boot switch to spi position
3. Download the desired image and uncompress it to a usb drive (ideally ext3/4 formatted, or vfat, not ntfs). Attach the usb drive to the N2
4. Apply power to boot from SPI
5. At the petitboot prompt - select Exit to shell
6. Mount your usb drive (if not already mounted). Something like

Code: Select all

mkdir /tmp/usb
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
7. Use dd to flash the image to emmc

Code: Select all

dd if=/mnt/usb/name-of-n2-image.img of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4M
8. Switch boot back to mmc, pull and reapply power and you should be able to boot
9. Profit!

@mad_ady: In the morning I was probing a slightly different version of your post, but I had to go outside. When I came back I saw your answer.

Now I had success do it this way:

1. Boot with the already working sd card.
2. When blue led starts to blink, attach the emmc card immediately
3. Then you have the emmc as /dev/mmcblk0.
4. Copy all of sdcard to emmc sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk1 of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=4M.
5. Reboot with only emmc.

But with first try I hadn't shrinked my 32GB sdcard to proper size and the emmc with 16GB didn't boot!
Then I shrinked the 2nd partition of the sdcard to 8G (on my host linux pc) and made this steps again, and success!

Then I had to resize the emmc 2nd partition to maximum size. I made this online on the N2:

1. fdisk /dev/mmcblk0
2. p (to show the partitions)
3. d and 2 (to delete partition 2)
4. n (for new partition) and p (primary) and 2 (partition 2) and 264192 (start sector)
5. w (write)
6. q (quit)
7. reboot
8. After reboot, to resize the 2nd partition: sudo resize2fs /dev/mmcblk0p2

Glad it works, though emmcs are not designed to be hot-pluggable.

We've updated our WiKi page to set the default sound output path manually.
