5.0V off the gpio headers

Unread post by scythefwd » Thu Apr 11, 2019 9:43 pm

I'm looking at the graphic on hardkernels website for the gpio on the xu4. It's showing pin 1 as 5v and pin 2 as ground on con10. Do I need to enable these, or are they always powered?
Do they put out sufficient amperage to run a fan like the noctua a4x20 (I'm looking at steady on vs. hacking up my stock fan cable and using it's header)? What is the pin spacing/size so I can get the right jumpers for it.. jumper is probably not the correct word here..

The noctua claims to be 19db.. My POE switch 5 ft from it is about 50db.. so I'll never hear it running, and it can't hurt running full time can it?

Thanks for any info..

how much current does the fan require..it`s a noctua so it should be stamped on the label ...it may also give a wattage rating..if you can find this out pls..
.normally i would drive that fan or any fan
either directly of a usb port..with a break out lead..a cut up usb3 lead...

you can buy male-female jumper wire kits from any electronic store there used as aduino so ask for that type..it will match i would say...

if you take power from a 5 volt pin you should be ok as it is grafted into the main 5 volt supply via the pmic chip ...

the 5 volt rail is always powered as long as the sbc is running..

The xu4 gpio pins are tiny - about 1.25 pitch. Regular dupont jumper cables are too big for them.

mad.. appreciate the info.. I may look into it further later and just modify the plug from the original fan for use to start with then.
Thanks for the info folks.. much appreciated.

Yes, it should work. The only concern (apart from accidentally shorting the pins) is that the power draw may affect stability if using a bad psu.

the fan draws 50mA so that is 250mW 1/4 of a watt..even if he has the fan on the 5 volt rail it is not using much power at all...

if he decides to run it of the onboard fan socket it will work fine i`ve done it before ..he can adjust the trip point`s if he so desires...

I'm running the 4 amp one ameridroid sells for it.. The ONLY things connected to it are hdmi, emmc, a network cable, and the fan. I dont even have kb and mouse hooked up. I manage it over ssh.

Is there a way to not require an hdmi cable to be plugged in for it to boot? For some reason I feel like (meaning I could be remembering completely wrong) that it wont boot without the hdmi cable plugged in.. I'm wanting to go truely headless.

As to accidentally shorting pins.. thats not likely to happen.. I'll be affixing single pin jumper sleeves or whatever they're called if I use the gpio headers.. Though I do feel I could solder the wire to the pin with little to no worries.. They're not THAT close (Id solder on then slide heat shrink tubing over to avoid any bridging possible)

yes you can go completely "headless" and many before you have done and still do...all you need is power and an eth and or a wifi module depending on your particular needs...when i say eth and or wfi i should say one or the other...if your happy to solder then do what pleases you..

you can do away with your screen ad hdmi cable and just ssh into it..or your particular method..

excellent.. that makes placement much easier lol.. For some reason I was thinking it required hdmi to boot.. I'll mess with it later.
