Wrong Kernel with Ubuntu 18.04.2

Unread post by HRF » Thu Apr 11, 2019 8:29 am

I'm looking for some help to update the kernel on an Odroid XU4 that I had upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 LTS a few months back. The upgrade did experience a hic-up but on a second try it updated to 18.04. I am currently running kernel 4.14.73-136. The XU4 has been running fine but I understand that it should be using kernel 4.14.85. I have done the apt update, apt upgrade, and apt dist-upgrade with no change for the kernel.

On apt update I get:
Hit:1 http://deb.odroid.in/5422-s bionic InRelease
Hit:2 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports bionic InRelease
Hit:3 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports bionic-updates InRelease
Hit:4 http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports bionic-security InRelease

My sources.list points to:
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ bionic main universe restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ bionic-updates main universe restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ bionic-security main restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ bionic-security universe
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ bionic-security multiverse

And Odroid.list has:
deb http://deb.odroid.in/5422-s/ bionic main

What can I do to get the most recent kernel?

Actually the latest Kernel is 4.14.107 not .85 ;)
HardKernel switched from linux-image and linux-headers to a new package called linux-odroid-5422 which is most likely why you don't get any updates anymore.
From what I've seen, there's also no transition from linux-image/linux-header to linux-odroid, means, you would have to manually uninstall one to install the other.

You can probably still update to Kernel 4.14.102 which seems to be the last they did with linux-image/linux-headers by installing "linux-image-xu3" meta package, but everything else involves manually intervention.

Thanks for the info.
I tried "apt install linux-image-xu3", but it reported that linux-image-xu3 is already the newest version (136-1).
So I will need to manually uninstall the current kernel and install the newest.
I will take a look in this forum but any hint on a post that would provide where and how to download and install?

Thanks again.

From what is see on the Odroid Wiki page, https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_i ... st-upgrade , you now need to build your own kernel by following the instructions below "Linux Kernel Build".

By doing this, am I correct that it wil uninstall and install the new kernel?
Is this what needs to be done from now on?

I somehow overlooked this, thinking it was way outside how things were done in the past.

PS.
So I followed the instructions on the ODroid Wiki page above and updated the kernel to 4.14.107+ with success.

Thanks again.

Incorrect!
Only the first part the one with apt-get update upgrade and dist-upgrade is the Kernel update information

The second part with compiling the Kernel, is NOT part of the update procedure, but merely a how to for people who want to build their own Kernel with their own changes.
It is NOT required to update the Kernel!

It will do NEITHER of both.
From a OS point of view you will still have older Kernel "installed" but you will overwrite certain files with the newer version of the Kernel.
Resulting in a mixed system where the Kernel version is different from the OS versions install list.

Absolutely NO!
Once again this is NOT how you do a Kernel update!

This guide existed in the past as well, even for Kernel 3.10, but it has nothing to do with the UPDATE procedure, but is simply a guide for people that want to build their own Kernel.

Congratz, you now have a system that thinks it has an old Kernel 4.14.73-136 installed, but instead runs on a Kernel 4.14.107+
You also will no longer get any updates of the Kernel, except whenever you build the Kernel yourself :)
