HiFi Shield 2 HW problem

Unread post by mentalrenegade » Sun Jan 13, 2019 8:10 pm

Hi all,
Everything had been fine with the board until some day it started to block normal operation of the C2 SBC. To be more specific, if I connect my Shield 2 to the SBC it doesn’t turn on upon power connection (no lights on the board at all). I’ve tried on different SBCs, different power adapters, different OSs (LibreELEC, Volumio2) - but no luck. I even connected the shield using a separated cable (without I2C bus): every time I connect +5V pin in addition to the others the SBC turns off immediately and turns on just as I disconnect this pin.
I suspect the power regulator of the Shield takes all current on the power line (5V). If so, could there be any steps to check?

Regards and thanks.

Which power supply do you use with C2?
Do you use DC barrel jack for power input? or Micro-USB?

I used the official HC power adapter (barrel jack) with the jumper turned off to reduce the power consumption. This config worked fine several months ago.

You can download the HiFi-Shield 2 schematics from this link.

Can you measure the resistance between 5V and GND of HiFi Shield board with a DMM?

BTW, when/where did you buy the HiFi Shield 2?

The resistance is 0.03 Ω. I suppose it’s nearly a short circuit, right?
It was bought in a local store in Russia (“onpad”) in December 2017. The revision is 0.2 20160726.

Right. I think it seems to be damaged by unknown electrical shock. :(

That’s sad. What’s the best way to find out which power regulator is dead (or both)? I could ask a pro to change it for a new one.

Remove components on the power rail and measure the resistance one by one to find a damaged component.
