XU4 the best OS for mediaplayer

Unread post by darkmen » Sun Jan 13, 2019 1:48 am

Hi all!
I am going to make myself a SD for media browsing on a TV. Sometimes I need a player and I want to try the XU4 rather then to buy new HW.
My expirience with Android image was pretty sad (it just hangs on video playback sometimes) totally dies.
The Ubuntu 18.04 I am trying now - makes me crazy because its sooo slowww. I feel I'm getting older while opening apps\ doing anything.

Any advice would be nice. Thanks.

Try the OGST image.

BTW, can you tell me which video format had a problem with Android?
Which Android version did you try? Which video player?
XU4 can't handle any H.265 format due to the hardware limitation.

Sure, it was LineageOS 14.1 i was tried to watch online movie (chrome browser player). But it was mess with video frame size (sometimes it was scaled too much in the same movie)
But in some minutes system was total hang (with last moment sound continously replay)

So, lets sum up:
Ubuntu 18.04 (4.14 kernel) - for now the best fit system, but 2 problems:
1. On boot before jump desktop it stops on filesystem remount (may be its a madia fault, I will know it today)
2. Kodi works good on movie playng, but when update happen (it runs automatic) - no more kodi working, Just hangs on the logo.

LinageOD 15.1 - Kodi refuse to load native some libraries, and runs no sound (red icon on the top right)
NTFS partitions seems cant play Update: can play but kodi cant see the hdd connected. Need to point through root fs

OGST (3.10 kernel) - the fastest system. Runs very fast. But problems with 1080p fullscreen playback with Kodi. Playback just stops in rundom places, Windowed playback was ok.

This way, till now there is no working solution to use XU4 as a mediaplayer. Too bad.

Chrome browser might use a different media framework.
Try other video player like Kodi or MX on Android.

Also let us know the video format first.

Android 8.1 was failed with kodi as i mention above
Which is the official stable android version for XU4 now?

Video format is hard to say for web-page players.

Armbian (kernel 4.19) - seems does not have hw acceleration, as kodi menu runs @ 1-2 fps and chromium on soft rendering

Official Android version is 4.4.4 Kitkat.

Try MX player and let us know the result.
