Shift Shield and cooling

Unread post by ruinah » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:17 am

I'm in the initial planning stage of converting my old arcade cabinet into an emulation machine and am considering using the XU4 with the the ArPiCade
<https://www.highscoresaves.com/arpicade ... igame.html>, which necessitates the use of the Shift Shield. I'm curious if anyone using the Shift Shield has had any cooling issues with it installed. I was about to order a XU4 from Amazon that already has the active cooling installed, but then I realized I needed the shield, so a fan will obviously not work in that setup, but I'm curious if the heatsink fits under the shield and if it's sufficient cooling for emulation. Any opinions or suggestions out there?

The shifter shield doesn't interfere with the fan. The fan will run more often with the shield attached since it is a bit like being inside a case.

Not exactly, although I may set something like that up initially. I have an old arcade cabinet, an Atari Showcase 33 style - https://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page= ... 09&image=1 - but I sold the JAMMA board out of it and want to convert it into a multicab of some type. High Score Saves sells their setup for RPis, but I'd like to use a XU4 for some better emulation performance and possibly run more demanding emulators if possible.

I see.
Once you rebuild your arcade cabinet with XU4, please consider writing an article for our Magazine.
