USB Hub Not Working

Unread post by F5tY*~/PF_`6voRpQVa@ » Fri Dec 28, 2018 5:08 pm

I'd bought 3 C2 boards couple years ago.
One of them had the USB hub metal back dislodged during an attempt to plug in (not excessively forced or something like that, it just happened, been even more careful with plugging in USB ever since), and it got dislodged when powered on. I assumed it shorted a component or something. It hasn't worked ever since, but it was tolerable since I swapped it with another board for the intended uses that would need to use the hub.
Now, I wanted to repurpose the board into something that would need the hub.

This is the difference of lsusb -v between a board that work and the board that doesn't:
Works:
Hub Port Status:
Port 1: 0000.0100 power
Port 2: 0000.0100 power
Port 3: 0000.0100 power
Port 4: 0000.0503 highspeed power enable connect (connected with an HD enclosure)

Doesn't work:
Hub Port Status:
Port 1: 0000.0000
Port 2: 0000.0000
Port 3: 0000.0000
Port 4: 0000.0000

Everything else remains the same.

Is the hub still salvagable by any means? I noticed that the hub got powered for a short time during bootup (because my HD enclosure lighted up for a moment), so I assumed it still can work.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Extra:
[ 284.338485] hub 1-1:1.0: over-current condition
[ 285.418294] hub 1-1:1.0: over-current condition

Can you show us "lsusb -t" output?
Which OS image and Kernel version do you use?

when hub is powered:
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=dwc2/1p, 480M
|__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 480M

when hub is overcurrent:
/: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=dwc2/1p, 480M
|__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/4p, 480M

Output's fully consistent with all my other boards.

I'm using Arch Linux ARM + mainline kernel, but I've got same results with other kernels or images (official Ubuntu and Android, Libreleec, Coreelec).
Besides, other boards are using Arch Linux ARM and equally updated and don't exhibit the same symptom as this particular board.
There are times when the hub is properly powered:

Hub Port Status:
Port 1: 0000.0100 power
Port 2: 0000.0100 power
Port 3: 0000.0100 power
Port 4: 0000.0100 power

But as soon as I plugged something in, sometimes it'll power on the USB device for a while (notably after I tightened the hub by hand), the dmesg invariably but eventually indicates "over-current" on the hub and perhaps overcurrent protection kicked in and killed the connection altogether(?). The wonkiness of USB hub of this particular board (popped out + loose metal back) compared to others I own somehow indicated manufacturing defect to me.

Ideas or pointers?

One of USB VBUS load switches could be damaged probably.
Schematics page 13 and 14 explain there ware two separated load switches.

Try other 3 ports.
