CS2 GPT Table gets corrupted during shutdown/boot

I am not exactly sure what is going on. It is the second time that the GPT Table of Raid1 8-TB HDD got corrupted.

I got it repaired with `gdisk -l /dev/sda` then loading and writing the backup partition header from the disk, but this is really strange.

Here is what GDISK says after loading:

The first time, this happened after about 24 hours CS2 running. The second time (now), the GPT was corrupted directly after start. No crashes or anything.

I've encrypted /dev/sda1, but the actual partition header has nothing to do with this, correct?

According to the raidmgr_static tool my firmware version is V9E.01.00.01
JMS561FwUpdate shows Bridge Firmware Version: v158.1.0.3 for

All started with the firnware update to .004 I think, so I was going back to .001, RAID1 was rebuilding yesterday and had status NORMAL when I switched the CloudShell2 off
Today RAID status is REBUILDING again and GPT errors listed are probably because the harddisk was GPT before and is now MBR, but the rebuilding is strange ... and I also had disk errors before

Today it happened again:
- 3 days running Odroid NAS
- proper shutdown yesterday
- boot up this morning
- luks encrypted partition /dev/sda1 not found

Any recommendations or ideas welcome. The sole reason I built this was for backup/nas. It seems like I can restore the GPT from backup each time, but with this problem the odroid is useless as a backup solution to me.

Does this mean unmounting/locking luks volume failed and shutdown destroyed the GPT table? There's an open issue on github that relates to this.

According to this it is plausible to believe that the corruption happens on shutdown/boot, and not during the running system:
Partition table damage upon shutdown is more believable because the firmware, boot loaders, and other tools might all touch the partition table, mostly after powering the system back up.
I will try to manually lock/unmount the volume before shutdown and see if the problem persists.

Did you update to latest openmediavault package via the admin interface ? I had a defective hard disk + sometimes the GPT Table was corrupted too, I exchanged the sda disk and updated to latest 4.1.17 and rebooted the system I think a hundred times (cold boot) due to testing of my LCD info screen and didn't had any GPT corruption since then.

Thanks! But I am running my NAS on ubuntu-18.04-4.14-mate-odroid-xu4-20180501.img.xz, however, I'll try the new one (ubuntu-18.04.1-4.14-minimal-odroid-xu4-20181203.img.xz if this problems persists.

I can't believe it is the disk - it is new and only the GPT header seems affected, nothing else.

I was sure it is the disk after I created a software raid1 and that raid told me the same as the hardware raid but more detailed, it told me sda status degraded and sdb normal after a cold boot, the disk are no name and strangely they do not show a type classification and the raid controller didn't show a serial number as well on those disks, I exchanged sda with a western digital and this disk showed a type classification on the disk info screen (OMV), everything was smooth after that and is working ok.

Thanks AreaScout. After monitoring this for a couple of months, I think I identified my issue:
Apparently, active Samba connections prevented secure unmounting of my luks-encrypted volume, and it was somehow forced. There is also a Github issue pointing in this direction.
I found out by running:

sudo journalctl -b0 | grep 'dev/sda'
(-b-1 means the log before the last, e.g. -1; whereas -b0 is the current log from last shutdown)

However, when I manually lock the volume before shutdown, the error does not appear in the logs and I never again had a corrupted GPT header since then.
I've written a bash file which unlocks & then issues shutdown. Perhaps I am one of the few people that still uses Samba (for those Windows clients in the network), that's why there are so few similar reports.

Well, I thought it was solved but now it happened again. This time, the GPT Table didn't get corrupted, however, the mount of the encrypted partition suddenly disappeared while running. I was so clever to look into

I'll do that as soon as my rsync finishes. Given these problems, I want to have up-to-date remote backups :)

I'll also try some of these suggestions which seem related. So far, still rsyncing (260GB to go). Happened a second time today after about 24h running (see update above).

And I'll finally upgrade the firmware of the Raid Bridge because here they suggest that there's a UAS issue fixed with the latest firmware

To me, this looks ok.

I've just upgraded to Firmware 158.01.00.04, will monitor if this solved the problem..

I already came to the conclusion that I am dealing with two problems:
First was the Corrupted GPT header, which did not happen again since I always disabled samba and manually unmounted the crypt-drive before shutdown. I think this was a bug in cryptsetup and how it handles locked devices on shutdown. Disabling samba service first seems to have solved this.

The second problem is (perhaps) an UAS-Firmware problem with the Raid-Bridge. After about ~24hrs running, the USB simply disconnects. I will see whether upgrading the firmware solved this..

That log puzzles me, what's happen here ? Who is sda ? So those are your mysterious disconnects ? that reminds me of a disconnect that I had with a USB stick, that was similar to the one you had, I didn't know what was the problem, but at the end that XU4Q on which the error was is defective now due to overheating, did you check the cables ? did you clean the USB contacts HK recommends in some post or wiki (can't remember exactly now), the contacts should be cleaned with alcohol, maybe that helps ...

Ok, that's smells now like if it's the whole RAID controller board with IR Sensor on it that loses the connection, did you check the connection from the cable to the board, this connection is a little bit weak because the angle of the cable is so small that it pushes on the connector ?

Yes, I re-assemlbed everything twice and now it seems to work again. There is not really a position where the RAID controller usb connection is "tight". [Edit] Just ordered a new CS2 Raid borad.. hopefully this will resolve my 12 months walk of pain..

Thanks, thats nice, I ordered it at hardkernel.com. But the problem can be anything - I think I have drilled it down to some hardware failure, but this is just a guess on my testing so far. The HDDs appear to be fine as far as I can tell. Got the notice that the new CS2 went into Customs today, so I should be able to replace the Raid borad next week and see if this works.

Got the CS2 Board and exchanged it today: Good news that I got it running immediately, the lirc-IR-logs are gone and I could mount my crypt-volume without any issues.
There're two log entries that I don't understand, but I guess they're coming from the Raid-Setup:

It's also good to know that one can easily exchange the Raid board [if it gets corrupted] and not loose any Raid data. I've heard stories that some Raid hardware is difficult to replace.

Thanks. It looks good - the CS2 is running since 5 days and not a single hickup so far. With the prior CS2-Board the longest it was working without HDD disconnect was 24 hrs to 2 days, never longer.
I'll leave it running but think this is it, yippie!

I can't tell whether its the USB-Cable or the raid-board, but I also don't want to play around with it when its working now. The USB-Raid-XU4 connection seems pretty loose on the first CS2-Raid board.. perhaps that or a true Monday-CS2-Hardware problem

3 months later, still works. :D
