boot on micro sd, root on sata drives via usb-c adapter

I did it on 16.04!
I didn't document it properly!
I need to do it again.
I'm having other issues with 18.04. I'll get to them later.
I actually did it a couple of slighty different ways on two systems.
Now, the closest I've gotten to working has a pause and some dots while mounting root during boot.
Looked like it was coming up anyway, but keyboard and mouse don't work.
So, I'm not sure how close it is.
I was probably doing it hard ways. Tried using dd, gparted, kpartx among other tools.
Systems I had working had duplicate uuid for root partition on micro sd and sata.
That seemed wrong, but it worked!
Figure out voodoo for changing uuid!
Figure out voodoo for configuring boot to use root on sata!
Or, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.
