usb-uart module not detected in linuxmint

Unread post by metrolan » Sat Jul 14, 2018 3:59 am

Hi there!

I've been searching for this in the board but didn't found nothing. If I am in a mistake, please direct me to the topic.

I've bought the usb-uart module from Hardkernel, but I can't see ttyUSB0 in /dev. The data:
Using linuxmint. Tried sudo modprobe cp210x, no errors. Pluging the module I can see with dmesg: USB Serial support registered for cp210x
But no ttyUSBx apears.

I've tried with putty in ttyS0 but didn't catch anything.

Any help on this?

Thanks in advance.

In mint I have to use sudo to run minicom by default otherwise you would need to setup a udev rule.

Can you show us "dmesg | grep usb" output?

It doesn't works, l have tried it
I have been using Putty for a long time with a Mirabox without problems and without sudo (of course, user added to dialout gruop).
As I plugged Mirabox to the USB, the ttyUSB0 appears.
Obviously, I have no other board attached to my desktop now, only Odroid-XU4

The driver seems to be loaded well.

Code: Select all

[ 595.669509] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
[ 595.669518] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic
[ 595.672202] usbcore: registered new interface driver cp210x
[ 595.672211] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for cp210x
But I have no idea why there is no /dev/ttyUSB0 in your system. As @rooted mentioned, something could be wrong with udev configuration in Mint.

Can you check VID:PID of USB-UART module?
It must be 10c4:ea60 in "lsusb" output.

The point is that there is no usb-uart module:

Code: Select all

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05e3:0749 Genesys Logic, Inc.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 062a:5918 Creative Labs
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 041e:4095 Creative Technology, Ltd Live! Cam Sync HD [VF0770]
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 072f:90cc Advanced Card Systems, Ltd ACR38 SmartCard Reader
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1b1c:1b36 Corsair
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 058f:9360 Alcor Micro Corp. 8-in-1 Media Card Reader
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I've plugged the module to a Windows desktop and it is no detected by W. Don't know if it should displayed some message, but nothing happens. I've tried 3 usb cables, both in my Mint desktop and in my son's windows desktop.

Maybe a faulty module?

I think it must be, does a red light come on the module when plugged into USB?

Are you plugged into USB 3 or 2? Try 2 if you can.

Thank you for your help, @odroid and @rooted, but still no results.
I've tested the module in USB3 and USB2, with 3 distinct cables, and no ttyUSB* yet.

disconnect the usb cable connected between the pc and board, after that reconnect them,
you will find that new uart port is registered to /dev/ttyUSB*

Well, I've already did that, with 3 cables, with two ports (usb 3 and 2)..... maybe 10 to 15 times.

I think your USB-UART module seems to have a hardware issue.
Please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of my post.
She will help your RMA process if you purchased the board from us directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor.

Thanks @moon.linux

Same results here for dmesg and lsmod, but no ttyUSB?

So I'll contact hardkernel for an RMA, as @odroid said.

Ok.
Please try this Windows 10 driver on your son's PC and let me know the result to narrow down root causes.

Sorry, I've just sent the module. The RMA gives me 3 days to do that, so I did fast.
