There currently isn't an upgrade path.

Actually, for xu4 you can upgrade (for c2 you can't yet). Try sudo do-release-upgrade -d

My XU4 fails with the following:

Error during update

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of
network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

I am loath to upgrade by dd-ing a new 18.04 image into place.

Because there was never armhf on archive? And armhf was always hosted at ports.ubuntu.com, like here http://ports.ubuntu.com/dists/bionic/main/ ?

The message I posted above is the output of do-release-upgrade. Is my version somehow broken?

Is this the correct/easiest way to still upgrade from 16.04.5 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.14.69-135 armv7l) to 18.04.1 LTS?

I just want to make sure I should not run into issues... :)

You don't need -d anymore, but yes, it should work.

Check if DNS is working from it. Try setting a DNS server manually in /etc/resolv.conf to see if it fixes the issue.

I will have to try the upgrade again.... I unfortunately reloaded a 16.04.1 image before I saw your request.
