Update ODROID-HC1/2 with 64-bit (A53/A55)

Unread post by david13lt » Fri Jun 15, 2018 2:46 pm

Are there plans in the roadmap to update ODROID-HC1/2 with 64-bit SOC? E.g., with Amlogic S905 (or newer) from ODROID C2?

Otherwise the product is highly interesting.

The N1 would have fit the bill nicely, but we're waiting to see if it will be mass produced. The C2 soc doesn't have usb3 sadly

From what I understood N1 will not happen if we can trust this: viewtopic.php?f=149&t=30219&p=225809#p225354

Also N1 significantly costs more compared to current HC1/2 boards. 49-54 USD depending which product you buy. N1 alone is 100+ USD.

Do you need ARM64 for something you run?

There might be scope for a low end HC device with quad little core ARM64 SoC but I'd hate to see it replace the current units that are offered as A53 are much slower cores overall and quite a few NAS tasks are reliant on high single core performance. ARM64/v8 would help on encryption tasks, but I'd still rather see overall higher performance. RK3399 is a great call as true replacement but people will have to accept the costs that would come with.

Exynos 5422 offers a near unbeatable price to performance ratio (which is why it serves Hardkernel so well!)

I didn't say it wouldn't happen, I said they haven't decided to mass produce the device and if that changes they will let us know ;)
