I want to have dual boot OS (retropie&Android) dummy’s guide

Unread postby atarioldskool » Fri May 18, 2018 8:51 pm

Hello All,

I am totally new to all this, I have received my xu4 and all the bits, first impressions it’s sooo tiny! Didn’t realise it was this small! But so excited !

I know there is quite a few post on this forum on how to have dual boot.
In all honesty it all reads a little complicated as I am not a computer tech so reading and writing codes etc go straight over my head.

I want to have retropie for all the retro gaming and want to also have android tv OS for the tv side of things (terrarium tv app, shoebox app, Mobdro app) I have got a 16gb emmc memory.
I don’t want to have it like a pc desktop

Does anyone know if there is a YouTube video showing how to do it ? Or can anyone please advise me a step by step guide on how to create dual boot on my 16gb emmc memory please ?

I just want the emmc memory just to boot up, I have a 1TB SATA 2.5 hdd for the main storage for all the roms, emulators, apps etc.

I know dual boot isn’t something odroid support but I know it has been done by a lot of people (mr odroid) has advise me of this as well)

Is someone able to help me please or is able to point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

It would be easier to dual boot by using the SD/eMMC switch, put Android on eMMC and Linux on SD and use the switch to boot whichever you prefer.

That's about containers, I think you linked the wrong article.

That is such a brilliant idea but the xu4 is going to be in a shell so I won’t have access to the switch and I don’t want to be cutting holes in the retro shell that I have.

Otherwise like you said it would have been the easiest way of switching between the two.

Thank you for that, think you mean page 24.

I just want to clarify - that is talking about android and Linux , I assume it would be the same process for Android and retropie?
Retropie works on Linux - so in order to have retropie working it needs to be installed onto Linux ?

I’ve had an idea since you last said this

If it works I’m going to try for a thin rod onto the switch and link it to one of the switches so when I push up or down on the outer switch the the rod will push this switch for sd or emmc so fingers crossed it will stick stiffly and work

My idea of trying to get that tiny switch some how to work so I could switch between sd and emmc from the outside of my retro shell , I just couldn’t get it done

I tried all sort of idea , extending the plastic arm for the switch , to using metal rods , but just wouldn’t work properly,
My whole day today was wasted on me trying to some how to make it work.

So I have no choice but to do a dual boot so please if anyone can help me / guide me through on how to do a dual boot I would really appreciate it

Look for loboris' multiboot thread. That should get you started.
Edit: if you feel like soldering you could solder jumper wires to the switch legs and destroy the rocker switch and use jumper wires to emulate the switch. But it's a bit risky.

*update*

I’ve given up on the idea of dual boot as I just don’t understand scripting I doesn’t the whole weekend, reading and then trying to implement but I just haven’t got a clue.

I’ve read the android magazine how to dual boot, I’ve read several post about how to dual boot and also Loborios post on how to

So I’ve decided I’m just going to flash the emmc with retropie by retro arena and scrap the idea of android and Linux boot.

Unfortunately setting up multiboot is still a bit complicated. :(

ORA on SD card and Android 7.1 on eMMC seem to be the best solution so far.
The small slide switch on XU4 can select each OS easily.
