XU4 is it still having issues with power from usb 3.0 port ?

Unread postby atarioldskool » Sun May 13, 2018 7:53 am

I have been reading a lot of post regarding the voltage from the usb 3.0 port on the xu4
Especially when connected to a SATA hdd
Apparently people are having problems with voltage drop and this is even using the Hardkernel 5v 6a psu
And the hdd stops reading (power failure)
These are post and articles dated end of 2017

Is this problem still happening ? Or has it been resolved ?

I am making my own retro games console to a high standard and I can’t afford to have under voltage / power issues
I want to be using a 1TB WD Black 2.5” SATA HDD

Please can anyone confirm this ?

Isn't an issue to my knowledge, you could use SSD which would be a better option in every way except price.

Or an externally powered 2.5" enclosure.

Hi thanks for your reply.

I’m a total noob this is all new to me,

Can I ask why will a SSD be better in every way ? I know it is much faster at reading and writing compared to HDD but what other ways can it be better ?
Yes SSD are way expensive for something like a 1TB your looking way over £150 and above for it too much
Max I want to spend on a hdd is £70 max the cheaper the better.

As for an external HDD I don’t want to be doing that I want everything to be enclosed in one shell don’t want and don’t have space for external separate boxes or equipment.

The posts that I have come across regarding inadequate power from the USB port are all from end of last year so don’t know if things have improved and resolved if not then unfortunately I will have to look for other brands of single board computer
But odroid seems the perfect one for my project

May be the odroid mods or specialist are able to confirm this ??

SSD is more efficient, generates no heat, much faster, not error prone..etc

You have to have an enclosure (or adapter) to use a hard drive, a powered enclosure (or adapter) will be minimally larger than self (USB) powered.

Unless you aren't talking about an XU4 and are talking about an HC1, in which case they have no HDMI.

Too bad you can't get the CloudShell 1 any longer, it makes for a nice compact 2.5" enclosure that is perfect for something like a game system.

Agree with that 100 percent. Kingston has some cheapos at $39 - which I've used with great success. @rooted : are those avatar specs IR3/IR5/UV a/b/c by any chance. Wear mine every minute, even in my sleep.
