XU4Q and VU7, Strange Color

Unread post by wado1942 » Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:16 am

Hello, I am a new owner of an XU4Q/VU7 combo and am getting strange colors. I did not originally notice the problem as text etc. looks normal, but looking at real graphics reveals that colors are not decoding properly. See the attached image, top example: gray scale is normal, red translates as yellow, green translates as cyan and blue is a weird purple color.
Image

For comparison, I plugged my Windows laptop into the VU7 (middle) using the supplied cables and it looks decent enough.
On bottom, I plugged the XU4Q into my TV and it looks fine as well.
I also tried swapping cables using the XU4Q/VU7 combo and it made no difference.

Any idea of what's wrong here? Thank you.

Can you share the color test pattern files?
I will try to reproduce with the files.

Hi @wado1942,

Which OS image do you use?
And could you share your /media/boot/boot.ini and result of uname -a here?

For reproducing the problem, more detailed system environment is needed. :)

Okay, could you try out this? https://wiki.odroid.com/accessory/displ ... odroid-xu4
Editing boot.ini is recommended when using Vu7 or another add-on display product.

Upgrading your kernel is recommended as well. Latest kernel version is 4.14.16-104 for now.

Thank you for your guidance. Unfortunately, it made no difference. Updating the kernel made no change to the appearance either but also broke the main program I use on my XU4Q (and wouldn't reinstall). I have since done a fresh install from the original image to at least get my program working again, but same strange color.

The funny thing is, the colors seem to look normal until I log into the system. Tux's beak and feet are yellow during the boot sequence and a little Bluetooth Icon that appears on the top right is blue. When I put in the password, it goes to crap.

Weird. Is the problem caused after installing your program?
Is there no problem right after installing OS freshly?

I think you already did as much as you could.
A couple of RGB signal connections seem to be broken.

Please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this thread.
She will help your RMA process if you purchased the board from us directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I have the issue even on a fresh install of the OS, and I've never worked in Ubuntu till now, so I just didn't realize there was a problem until I started using the web browser (which exposed me to familiar sites that didn't look right).

Thank you. I sort of wondered the same, but it's strange that both the Odroid feeding my TV is fine and the VU7 is fine being fed by other computers.

It is really weird. I lost my way. :(
I think you already tried other HDMI cables.

Yeah, a different cable was the first thing I tried. It's like the screen is mixing up the Cr/Cb channels, but only when being fed via Odroid.

I've looked into your boot.ini again and found a clue.

There are three items to try. Please try one by one.

1. Uncomment "dvi" line and comment "hdmi" line out.

Code: Select all

# --- HDMI / DVI Mode Selection ---
# ------------------------------------------
# - HDMI Mode
setenv vout "hdmi"
# - DVI Mode (disables sound over HDMI as per DVI compat)
# setenv vout "dvi"
2. Change "HPD" option to "false" from "true".

3. Uncomment this line.

Code: Select all

# setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/800x480.bin"

Thanks for the suggestions. I already fixed the first one. The second two made no difference. Still, I find it odd that the color is correct until I log into the OS, so I don't think it's a defective screen or Odroid.

If the video output(vout) mode is "hdmi", Ubuntu OS generates a short period of sound in the login process. We call it "booting sound".
The audio signal in the HDMI path could affect the video signal.

Can you check "dmsg" output via SSH connection to make sure the vout parameter?

I think you use XU4 USB to supply power for VU7, right?
Just for test, could you try another USB power source like your Host PC's USB port?
I mean keeping HDMI cable connected to XU4Q and changing the connection of USB cable to your host PC.

No difference there, good thought though.

That's logical. I don't know how to do any of that though.

Any way, I've tried all the INI file changes suggested here and none of them seem to make any difference, aside from the Odroid no longer displaying video on my TV. That's a real disappointment (and Hardkernel themselves basically gave me the finger). I guess I'll just have to put the original INI file back and deal with ugly color when I'm using the touch screen.

Just as an experiment, I put the original INI file back, booted into Ubuntu using my TV as a screen, then switched to the VU7... NORMAL COLOR!
Did I input something wrong? I copied/pasted all the suggested code directly, so I'm not sure how.

[addendum}, I tried logging into the Odroid without the VU7 connected at all (HDMI or USB), then connected it. Bad color there too. So the only way I have gotten the correct color on the XU4Q/VU7 pair is if I log into Ubuntu with my TV connected, then change to the VU7.

Try to access the SSH.
Connect your XU4 to your router via Ethernet connection.
And, try find its IP address : https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/soft ... ip_address
Then use putty to access the XU4 vis SSH (remote console)
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/soft ... connection

And capture "dmesg" output on the remote console command line.

Hi, this thread seems abandoned, however, on the N2 I experience very similar issues. When I boot into Ubuntu MATE with the screen (Samsung SyncMaster P2470HD, connected via HDMI), the colors are OK. When I switch the screen off and on again, I get the weird green and purple colors. I found other threads where the boot.ini shall be modified with the parameter forcergb, but neither this nor disabling CEC in the boot.ini helps with this issue.
I attach my dmesg, the screen switch off and on took place at line 1162 (264.589298s). I can also see some HDMI related error messages, however, I cannot understand them. Thanks for your help!

Did you connect the Vu7A+ 1024x600 display?
In that case, disable auto-detect option and choose 1024x600 resolution by editing boot.ini file.

@ste_fan,

[1]
Can you share which command or action you're using when you turn off the hdmi screen?
ex1) using power management option?
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/appli ... ur_monitor
ex2) hdmi phy on/off via sysfs?
ex2) detach hdmi cable or turn off monitor?

If you use one of them as a way for screen on/off control, I think other users may encounter same issue.
I will reproduce this issue by my side.

[2]
And to make sure, can I check one more?
You use Samsung SyncMaster P2470HD (not VU7 series monitor), right?
P2470HD : 1920x1080p60hz

Thanks for your replies!
@odroid I think you refer to a different display model than mine..? I have a Samsung SyncMaster P2470HD, not the VU7. I posted here because I experience very similar issues.

@joy
[1]
- using the power management option: the monitor will not fully turn off, it will only display "no signal". After moving the mouse or pressing a key, the colors are OK (after a fresh boot, when the colors are OK)
- using the sysfs hdmi on/off: same as above
- detach hdmi cable or turn off monitor (either by pushing the button on the screen or on the remote control): colors are bad.

[2]
Yes, it is a Samsung SyncMaster P2470HD, not the VU7.

Thanks again! Please let me know if you need any more information.

Hi. @ste_fan,
Thanks for your reply!
I will reproduce the issue by my side as your guide and share the result here.
