Ideal CPU Load for Longetivity

Unread post by ashes999 » Sun Sep 17, 2017 9:40 am

I recently purchased an oDroid C2 for a project that didn't pan out. Now, I'm stuck with the hardware. I'm thinking of donating it for citizen science (World Community Grid). This basically entails downloading a client, which will download work-units to "crunch" (perform several hours of CPU intensive operations).

In order to maximize the life of my oDroid C2, what kind of CPU load should I specify? I can specify max CPU load (eg. 70%) and number of cores to use (1-4).

I thought running a 50% CPU load on all four cores might be best, but I'm not sure if that's better or worse than running 100% CPU on one core, or something else.

Any ideas?

It all comes down to heat. Keep the heat to reasonable levels (e.g. 70C) and it should run for a long time. You can tweak maximum cpu frequency and governor to do this. On the software side you can give it 100% cpu time.
To reduce heat by 10C you should remove J1 jumper

What is the J1 jumper and how does it reduce temperature

J1 controls powering the board via usb-otg.

You can go for full load.
I own serveral Odroid-c2's, wich I'm also using for Boinc. Einstein@home in my case.
All of them running @100% load, CPU overclocked to 1.75Ghz and RAM overclocked to 1.104Ghz.

The oldes one of them crunches over 2 year's now with these settings, without any issues.
I've never lost a C2(or any other sbc) due to the high load or the overclocking.
Just take care of the thermals, all of my c2's are active cooled by a fan.
