How To Control Fan Speed On Odroid-C2?

Unread post by xymantec » Sat Aug 19, 2017 3:33 am

I have a few units that run their fan at full speed when CPU is at about 40%. I need to tone it down a bit because they can get pretty loud and in some environments "too loud". I did some searching which led me to a thread on the XU3/4 but I could not access the same configuration files. Any help in what direction to go would help. Thanks!

How did you connect a fan motor to C2?
Do you use a PWM port on 40pin header with a transistor for motor driving?

Anyway, remove the J1 jumper if you use the DC-jack for the power source. It will lower the system temperature significantly.

I hooked it up directly to GPIO (Pin 4 & 6) according to your GPIO map https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/hardw ... connectors

Then no, you can't adjust the speed, as you are only using power and ground; there's no way to get or send data to the fan.

An alternative option, however, is to connect the power lead to a 3v pin instead of a 5v pin. Less power means less speed and noise.

moin'...
why not choosing a fan operating from round <= 5V to 12V? - enabling a smooth running speed (due to 'only' 5 V from C2)
such as:
94‑320527 Axiallüfter, 40x40x10 12V-, 0,9W 3,95 EUR
from (as i am in germany) pollin.de
the SUNON HA40101V4-999 has an operating voltage: 4,5 to 13,8 V...
or similar...
an due to running at 'only' 5 V (from the 40-pin-header) the consumption is very low AND you can't hear it :-)
my ambiant ist round 27°C and my C2-CPU is reaching just 36°C to 44°C (on my normal use such as spreadsheeting - emailing and surfing) and even on playing HDvids just round 54°C.
the fan is above the C2-case (blowing! INTO it - better result) and the heatsink is still installed.
it is all depending of what you are intending to use your C2 for...
just a little hint ;-)

Wow, I can't believe I never thought of using the 3V pin... #fml
Thanks guys!

Hi guys,

and it possible to control 5V(or3.3v) out to switch on/off depends on temperature?

Thanks!

You need to add a transistor to control 5V/3.3V load.
