10-bit HEVC playback - black screen ?

Unread post by spaceman_spiff » Mon Dec 26, 2016 12:01 pm

Running the latest LE 7.1.1 and all seems good so far.

Downloaded an HEVC video with 10-bit colour and I get sound, but no video?

My TV is is not 10-bit, but my understanding is that the C2 can decode and play 10bit H.265 and but outputs it as 8-bit.

Do I have a configuration issue?

I can play the source video just fine on my PC using media player classic and the stats report the video file correctly as HEVC and 10bit depth?

Try running "echo 16 > /sys/module/amvdec_h265/parameters/dynamic_buf_num_margin", if it works you can put it in /storage/.config/autostart.sh so it's run on every reboot

Issued that command and still have audio, but a black screen when trying to two different H265 10-bit files

Do you have a sample of the video?

Download the Mediainfo PC/Mac program and have a look at the Metadata of the problem files. Sound like the clips are trying to resolution switch to an unsupported TV resolution resulting in black screens.

Not having any issues with a wide variety of 10bit HEVC content on my 4K TV.

Umm...I'm not sure? Are you talking about the options in Settings > Video > Playback and then Adjust Display Refresh Rate to Match Video ?

If so, yes, I have that enabled. I also tried disabling it to see if it would have any effect and it didn't?

Ok. I've been playing around with some test files I found that are 10-bit HEVC that actually do play correctly on my Odroid to my older Samsung 1080p TV.

When I compare the metadata I did notice two slight variations and I'm wondering if this explains it at all?

The files that don't play have these metadata string:

Code: Select all

Format profile : @L4@Main
Chroma subsampling : 4:4:4
The ones that do play correctly list these:

Code: Select all

Format profile : Main 10@L4.1@High
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Does this shed any light on the problem?

I have this problem with some 10bit hevc videos, while other 10bit hevc videos play without problem. I assumed it was the decoder does not like certain format parameters.

The C2 can't output 4:4:4 but I think it should be able to play it.

Could it have something to with the format profile that says @L4@Main ?

Tested a few more videos - anything that is @L4@Main format profile with Chroma 4:4:4 yields no video.

I don't know enough about encoding and codecs to know if @l4@Main is always Chroma 4:4:4 or if you could have a video that @L4@Main and 4:2:0 - I have yet to find a video with that combination for testing purposes.

EDIT: Ok, I found another video that is @L4@Main format profile with Chroma 4:2:2 and that yields no video either. So it looks like something with the @L4@Main format profile???

I believe all the way to @L5 is supported, something else is incompatible in the stream or it could be in the hardware codec but I don't think so. I have previously seen the same thing on the Pi2/3 and they only do software decode.

I have seen this before, can you try to fast forward and see if the picture appears?

When I play the videos it doesn't even activate the screen player. I have to go back to the main KODI menu and the activate the fullscreen player. When I do that, still no video and fast forward doesn't have any affect.

Just wondering if there are any more thoughts on this? It really seems like the odroid cannot successfully decode 10-bit HEVC using a @L4@Main format profile.

I just got a brand new samsung TV and re-tested this in case it was some sort of weird issue with my 2009 model Samsung TV and I still can't watch any videos encoded with an @L4@Main profile.

EDIT: Changed my post as I meant to say decode and not output above

The C2 will never output 10bit video; however, this is entirely different from decoding 10bit HEVC which it can do and I have tested works (outside of Kodi).

The tested media file is here:

Duration : 01min 53sec

Bit depth : 10 bits

sorry...typo on my part. I meant to say decode and not output. I know it can't output 10-bit video.

Also, as I've stated before it has no problem decoding and playing some 10-bit HEVC encodes - especially those using format profile Main 10 @L4@Main. However, format profile @L4@Main yields no video. I suspect that the odroid-c2 is capable of it, but that there is some sort of bug that prevents this format profile from outputting video on the odroid-c2. I'll check out your test video once it finishs downloading, but for some reason it only comes down at 1.4mbps so it is taking a looooonggg time to download.

The site is slow for me too.

If the sample video plays but your video does not, you will likely need to provide a sample of it for analysis. If the video is encoded using Dolby Vision HDR or HLG HDR, then it is not expected to play correctly.

Ok, finally got that video to download. It plays fine for me.

I've finally had some time to do some more thorough testing and investigating. The files I have problems with have been encoded using IFME (Internet Friendly Media Encoder). When you encode with that tool (which is based on FFMPEG) and select Chroma 4:2:2 or Chroma 4:4:4 it sets the Format Profile to @L4@Main. If you set the Chroma to 4:2:0 it sets the Format Profile to Main 10@L4@Main.

So here are some sample files that I made of the freely available 10-bit HEVC JellyFish bitrate test files.

Original file
http://jell.yfish.us/media/jellyfish-10 ... -10bit.mkv

Re-encoded with IFME using Chroma 4:2:0 (plays video on odroid-c2 with LE)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0n49z800guecb ... 0.mkv?dl=0

Re-encoded with IFME using Chroma 4:2:2 (doesn't play video)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ixdyb4e6fwxrv ... 2.mkv?dl=0

Re-encoded with IFME using Chroma 4:4:4 (doesn't play video)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wya2as6mdxybn ... 4.mkv?dl=0

I don't know enough about encoding to figure out if you can encode HEVC with Main 10@L4@Main format profile using Chroma 4:4:4. I'll have to look for some other HEVC encoders to see if it is possible to encode that way.

There are errors shown in the kernel log when attempting to play the bad videos:

Code: Select all

[335570.003602] codec:cur lcu idx = 12, (total 510), set error_mark
That error comes from here:
https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blo ... 65.c#L3523

This suggests the encoding is not compatible with the hardware decoder. The datasheet confirms only "Main 10" is supported (p. 11).
Video/Picture Decoding
- H.265 HEVC MP-10@L5.1 up to 4Kx2K@60fps
[edit]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Effi ... ng#Main_10
The Main 10 profile allows for a bit depth of 8-bits to 10-bits per sample with 4:2:0 chroma sampling.

So basically, there isn't support for decoding anything that has a Chroma 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 subsample?

I notice few lines above that entry it shows the GPU with:
Supports multiple video formats 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 and multiple pixel formats (8/16/24/32 bits graphics layer)
Is that not helpful because the GPU isn't handling any of the video on HEVC decoding?

There is support for displaying YUV422 and YUV444, but there is no support for H265 (HEVC) hardware decoding it. I am not aware of any consumer level HEVC hardware than handles profiles above Main-10. Even NVidia's $1000+ GPUs only support 4:2:0 in hardware.

According to wikipedia, the GeForce 10xx cards support Main-10 and Main-12 with 4:0:0 (monochrome) and 4:2:0, but not the 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 chroma.

I have just encountered this also with HEVC 4:4:4 playback.

I don't support there is a workaround, or lossless way of converting the files to 4:2:0 or something the C2 can decode?

It's not just that, I have a series that blackscreens and it is 4:2:0 8bit @L5 profile.

Is SW decoding possible at all with HEVC on the C2? This file I have is "only" 720p and L3.1.

Code: Select all
