Minimal Debian Jessie Image for Odroid U3

Unread post by dfroe » Tue May 05, 2015 5:35 am

Hi,
I recently bought a Odroid U3 board - and it really surprised me. Great to have that much ARM power on this little and cheap board!

During the last days I tried and modified several OS images and tools I needed for my U3.
Finally I ended up with a minimal Debian Jessie installation.
Basically I took the official Ubuntu 14.04 Image from http://www.odroid.in/ubuntu_14.04lts, created a minimal Debian Jessie bootstrap based on the thread by loboris (http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=112&t=8075), and then merged anything together.

The result is a very basic Debian Jessie for the U3. Perfect for advanced users who just need a headless pure Debian and know what to do with it.
The image fits on a 4 GB MicroSDHC card. Only 450 MB of the filesystem are used. After boot only 30 MB RAM are consumed.
eth0 is configured with dhcp, sshd is running.
Login: odroid/odroid

Download Link:
https://mega.co.nz/#F!tpYmibgK!McPkWcmZ0nhz3KHVlAgl1Q
odroid-u3-debian-jessie.img.xz, Compressed file size 133 MB.

Checksums of the extracted image:
MD5: 4ca44a9c06b5552d3be4d717fd29efe7
SHA1: 49b4095b8beb0c76861b122ff47a99f84da3c6b0
SHA256: 219db36a4130501745edf0c05354f60d8583bbaf0c0c51be6e64c5111212329c

There I also uploaded two tiny tools I wrote for my U3.
One is a simple fan control service to make the fan a little bit more convenient.
The other one is a tiny tool to watch activity of storage devices like USB hard disks and spinning them down after being idle for a certain amount of time.

Maybe someone might find this useful.
All uploads come without any warranty, so feel free to test, modify and use it by yourself.

David

testing on fresh image

Code: Select all

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install fuse
apt-get install fuse-utils
addgroup fuse
/usr/local/bin/install_desktop

Code: Select all

Configuring desktop...
  patching xorg.conf
  configuring windows manager
  configuring sound

*****************************************
* DESKTOP INSTALLED, please REBOOT now! *
without reboot

Code: Select all

apt-get install task-lxde-desktop
after reboot lxde not start, balckscreen after boot
/var/log/syslog

Code: Select all

systemd[1]: Starting Light Display Manager...
lightdm[1053]: ** (lightdm:1053): WARNING **: Could not enumerate user data directory /var/lib/lightdm/data: No such file or directory
systemd[1]: Started Light Display Manager.
systemd[1]: lightdm.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
systemd[1]: Unit lightdm.service entered failed state.
systemd[1]: lightdm.service holdoff time over, scheduling restart.
systemd[1]: Stopping Light Display Manager...
now I am testing without /usr/local/bin/install_desktop
only apt-get install task-lxde-desktop
I report if it works then

EDIT:
it works, only apt-get install task-lxde-desktop
/usr/local/bin/install_desktop is the problem.

Thanks for Help

Hello,

I tried the script of loboris to build a jessie image for my U2, but it doesn't boot.
I tried after your image, it worked.
As i'm still learning and a noob, can you tell me the modification you did to make it working please ?
I want it to start like a headless server, but I also want to be able to start a desktop (openbox) with mali driver.
Maybe uboot file must be different ?

Thanks.

I started with the official Ubuntu image provided by odroid. After mounting the root partition I deleted all files except /boot and /lib/modules and finally copied the files from a debian bootstrap to the filesystem (of course without /boot and /lib/modules). So you end up with the GNU Debian system, but with the kernel, bootloader etc. from the original Ubuntu image.
That's the way I created the image.

Would the image work with an XU4 as well? I'd think so, but I'm just guessing.

Nope. XU4 is not compatible with U3.

Hi David,

can you please share with us the script you have to build this image?

I would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Smiecie

To install it

Code: Select all

apt-get update

make
make install
To know what "odroid-fan-control" do

Code: Select all

odroid-fan-control -h
This utility will permanently watch the temperature
and adjust the fan speed as required.

	-h Print this help.
	-v Verbose debug mode.
	-t Read temperature and exit.
-i <n> Interval between checks in seconds.
	-y <n> Hysteresis in centigrade.

Something has happened and from one day to the other I suddenly can't log in anymore. Odroid with this image used to appear as "odroid" on my router, but now it appears as "debian" and the "odroid" password won't go through when I try to SSH to the device. This is very strange. Anyone else had this before?

i am a windows user . i know all about dos commands '
and i know basic stracture of linux. but this image annoys me ~ for these reasons.
1 its come out as german lang.. english my second lang and i know that cover much of all of us.
2 it doesnt respond my ssh connection attempt through putty.right after i burn the card .
3 it asks password when it starts up.. it s much of a hassle .
for all the respect.for ripper of image . i am begging you to consider these circumstances for all of us..

you're using an image that is over two and a half years old and hasn't seen any updates.
