Android Custom Kernel

Unread post by mdrjr » Tue Apr 30, 2013 1:11 am

Well, Back in time I used to do that for you guys, I'll be back doing that, but since now theres too many images and too many devices to cover.. I'll do on-demand.

For ODROID-X Options are:
Mali: 266Mhz, 440Mhz, 533Mhz
CPU: 1.4Ghz, 1.5Ghz, 1.6Ghz

For ODROID-X2 / U2 Options are:
Mali: 266Mhz, 440Mhz, 533Mhz, 640Mhz, 733Mhz, 800Mhz
CPU: 1.4Ghz, 1.5Ghz, 1.6Ghz, 1.7Ghz, 1.8Ghz, 1.9Ghz, 2.0Ghz

When requesting device driver support please keep in mind that Android also needs implementation to make it work nicely on it. So request what you'll actually use..
Requests like ... XYZ wifi devices won't be attended for the reason above (needs android RIL modifications)
Enabled Webcam (Needs android modifications).
Be realistic on what you'll ask.

Kernels will be uploaded to my server and you'll be able to browse each user request kernel for each board! :)

How to request.. Answer the questions below:
Board:
Boot Media:
OS Version:
Req. CPU Frequency:
Req. Mali Frequency:
Additional requests:

EXAMPLE On how to answer that:
Board: U2
Boot Media: eMMC
OS Version: Jellybean 1.6
Req. CPU Frequency: 2.0Ghz
Req. Mali Frequency: 533Mhz
Additional requests: I want CD ROM enabled

I'll assign a number also to your kernel witch will be the post number of this thread so users can know what exactly that kernel have :)

So nice! keep on the good work !!!
As I didn't recieve my X2 board yet (according to HK it will get shipped later this week), please excuse my ignorance.
I heard the several pins of the 50 I/O soldered on the board support ADC, so my request is:
Board: X2
Boot Media: eMMC
OS Version: Jellybean 1.6
Req. CPU Frequency: default
Req. Mali Frequency: default
Additional requests: I want driver for ultrasonic proximity sensor + myltiple USB webcam support
thanks in advance :)

I'll suggest you to read the first top carefully.
On USB Webcams.. It requires Android modifications as well its not just a kernel update. Enabled USB Webcams on the kernel won't simply magic make it work on Android. Android isn't friendly on hardware that you want to plug in on it.
Keep in mind that the Android design and concept was made to a device where you don't change anything connected to it.
Also on your device it doesn't have any specific driver for it, as it's very simple and a 2 pin device. Nor I own one to test, so sorry, this is not doable by myself.

Board: U2
Boot Media: SD
OS Version: Jellybean 1.6
Req. CPU Frequency: 2.0Ghz
Req. Mali Frequency: 800 mhz
Additional requests:none, but i'd be happy if at some point you can do same settings build but for EMMC (i have the 8gb) ; you know,in the case i will switch ubuntu on sd and android on Emmc

Many many thanks in advance man,you are so kind!

i have a doubt about a thing i never tried yet,and want to ask.Is there anyone who know if standard android can read arduino boards attacched via usb like a normal phone?does it require additional support drivers or special implementation to being recognized from U2?
cn't try now due to the fact my uno and mega are connected and with a sketch running..and my 3rd arduino i bought today has yet to arrive

Hi, I received my odroid u2 yesterday and I am very happy ^_^ .

I am wandering if it was possible implement multi-step gpu frequencies like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1927852 in perseus (or redPil) kernel for Galaxy Note 2. I am very noob, but sice the hardware of SGN2 is similar to odroid u2 the port could be simple. Then, I am also wandering if instead of compile the personal kernel with gpu/cpu overclock it was possible to modify the kernel to be compatible with sTweaks app like Perseus Kernel (and many other android kernel) to modify these parameters including voltage of cpu/gpu.

Thank you in advance for any answer (and for my English) :)

Android + Arduino ==> the mega ADK board connected to an OTG port would be the best choice for you !

Hi,

We had those implemented in the past, however the Mali DVFS causes so crazy flickering while outputing to HDMI. The same flickering occours on my phone that is a SGN while using the MHL thing. That's why we have this disabled.

not so best choice..because i can do the same with every arduino(mega 2560 better, and i own this)and an usb host shield(tht i own).So there no need to buy a mega adk! ;)
i tried something when i bought the shield, but i have only nexus devices with jellybean and all thing are not compatibile anymore....ics is good i think

If the mali frequency is set to 800 in Android, can you use some specific app to lower the speed when you don't need it that high, or are the GPU frequencies set to one number... that is, are they dynamic like the CPU freq or not)?
ODROID Boards: U2, X2, XU+E rev.2

On ODROID we have to disable Mali DVFS because it causes flickering on HDMI. (Happens even on my phone as well. Galaxy note).
So we have to lock a frequency at a point :( Sorry.

Probably a dumb question here, but I have searched and can't seem to figure it out.

How do I flash the new kernel?

Board: U2
Boot Media: SD
OS Version: Jellybean 1.6
Req. CPU Frequency: 2.0Ghz
Req. Mali Frequency: 800 mhz

I've downloaded the file, renamed, and placed in the root of the SD Fat partition. Not sure where to go from here.

I've also tried this to no avail:

6. Copying the kernel:
adb push arch/arm/boot/zImage /system/lib/modules

7. Flashing the kernel from Android itself:
adb shell
cd /system/lib/modules
busybox dd conv=notrunc seek=2455 bs=512 if=zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0
sync
exit
adb reboot

Thanks!

yesterday i faced similar problem.
Try paste the zImage in system\lib\modules manually instead of root of fat32 partition, then go with point 7 taking care of writing exactly what mdrjr report.
after the busybox dd command you have to see something like xxx record in \ xxx record out, then sync, exit and reboot.

Just tried it again, after pasting zimage into /system/lib/modules and running:

adb shell
cd /system/lib/modules
busybox dd conv=notrunc seek=2455 bs=512 if=zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0

I get

dd: can't open 'zimage': No such file or directory

I know the file is there, I can see it on my odroid root explorer so I know it exists.

Should the file have an extension? Do I need to "build" the kernel as described in step 4?

4. Build the kernel and modules!
make -j4 ARCH=arm zImage modules

Thanks again for your help.

Just got it to work, this time I actually left the zimage in /sdcard and ran the dd busybox command. All went well and is now installed. Thanks a ton for the help! This board is awesome and the forum is a lot of help I really appreciate it.

Boot Media: SD
OS Version: Jellybean 1.5
Req. CPU Freqency: 2.0 GHz

Also I realized I forgot to ask this in my previous request, but can you add support for the 7inch MCPIA 1024x600 touch module.

Sorry, boss, I can't do the MCPIA mod for you. I don't have one to test :(

I hope you understand that even when we do have hardware to test, we may skip on thing or another..
Without it will be pettry much a error shot :(

how would i add support to the current image or would I have to make a new one?
Could you maybe post your code for the kernel you made before, as I don't have much time on my hands. I'm currently developing a gamecube emulator for android, so I have very little time to work on this project

boss,

I use stock kernel, I just change the options to enable overclock, no source modification is done.

Mikhail,
I will ask you to read my OP, already answer you request.
What you are requesting isn't just a kernel update its way more complex.
3G on Android relays on top of the Android RIL and requires a implementation for that. Its not a kernel update.
Kernel wise speaking its a 10minutes job.. But If I enable the USB 3G modem and you plug your modem..
Nothing will happen. Android doesn't work like your regular Linux that will handle anything that you throw at it :(
You have to code it on the Android Sources, on the 3G case the RIL framework.
There's a RIL for Android called hauwei to support those modems.
Its not a promise but I'll look onto hauwei ril and see if one day I can implement that.

USB Cameras, should be working as far as I know on 1.7.1.

OpenCV is up to your project we have several poeple already doing that.

I know this is off-topic, but consider adding existing implementations of wifi chipsets to the source, such as the ones implemented by allwinner.. I'm not sure how hard it'll be but considering it's already done, merging shouldn't be too time consuming (consder: i don't have idea what I'm talking about)

Hi mdrjr!Care to rebuild my request for kernel (like in second post)for 1.7.4 version?
it's stopped at 1.7.1 and flashing it on 1.7.4 (robroyhall)or 1.7.6 test (codewalker)give strange artifact,recovery wasnot there anymore,etc etc.
Codewalker has changed something, added init.d support etc.Now i'm with 1.7.4 rob version anyway.
thank you very much
