Vu8m

Post by yeepp »

Hello everyone, I just acquired an M1 board with a vu8m screen, impossible to start the screen or to have it recognized on the ubuntu provided on the wiki. Is there a special manipulation to do?

Thank you for the replies.

As of now, Vu8M is now able to show the picture when HDMI connector is connected and trying to fix it.
If you want to verify the hardware Vu8M and ODROID-M1, please use Android.

In order to enable the display Vu8M, change the config.ini in the first partition, this will enable Vu8M display in the kernel.

Code: Select all

overlays=display_vu8m

Great thanks, it works. On the other hand, by disconnecting the HDMI it does not work without putting the overlays in the config.ini

Yes, that's the problem with the current Ubuntu image and this happens/realized before releasing the image. It was fine when patching the kernel for the display at first. Sorry about that trying to fix it. :(

Oh, thanks...let me update you when I have a fix.
By the way, are you running Ubuntu Desktop and change the orientation of it?

Thanks for the details, I was wondering how to set it up as well.

Just a note when I was assembling the board I found the screw holes on the back side of the screen were covered with a layer of plastic. It took me a while to work out why the screws would not fit, I needed to scrape off the plastic (gold colored stuff)

Yes I am using Ubuntu Desktop, and I changed the orientation to landscape mode. The M1 will be used to control home automation via an application under electronJS.

The plastic pellets used to protect the threads to avoid metal shavings and jam the screws.

I suspected these stickers are for pick and place machines, similar to stickers sometimes found on connectors and other irregular components.
After all these spacers appear to be soldered to PCB :)

I haven't opened my M1 yet, but I'll be playing with it tomorrow night at work. Will my VU7A+ have any trouble in Ubuntu? I could have started a new thread but there's already a lot of more or less on-topic information here.

If I remember correctly, it worked...Since I am going to play with Vu8M for the display issue, I will double-check it. If you try earlier than me please let me know if it works. :)

All is well with VU7A+, video, touch, and audio all worked out of the box in Ubuntu. One oddity is that the M1 will not switch to built-in audio from HDMI in the sound configuration for me.

built-in audio from HDMI in the sound means you do not audio output through 3.5" audio jack or something else?

EDIT: I can also confirm that Vu7A+ works with ODROID-M1 and 3.5" audio jack works when select Analog Output - Built-in Audio in Settings. For audio, please check the version of odroid-alsa.

Code: Select all

$ dpkg -l | grep odroid-alsa
ii odroid-alsa 5:22.03+202204042136~focal arm64 Board specific default ALSA configuration

I could get audio from both points on the display, but not the M1 audio jack. It let me select it in settings but it wouldn't work. Maybe it's a hardware issue, I'll try a different pair of headphones.

Please do run the command sudo amixer -D hw:1 and share the output, this is mine when headphone works.

Code: Select all

Simple mixer control 'Playback Path',0
  Capabilities: enum
  Items: 'OFF' 'RCV' 'SPK' 'HP' 'HP_NO_MIC' 'BT' 'SPK_HP' 'RING_SPK' 'RING_HP' 'RING_HP_NO_MIC' 'RING_SPK_HP'
  Item0: 'SPK_HP'
Simple mixer control 'Capture MIC Path',0
  Capabilities: enum
Items: 'MIC OFF' 'Main Mic' 'Hands Free Mic' 'BT Sco Mic'
  Item0: 'MIC OFF'
If you do have OFF, not SPK_HP, audio jack output is off. Then try this command,

Code: Select all

sudo amixer -D hw:1 -q sset 'Playback Path' 'SPK_HP'
I am unpuzzling the very last piece to enable Vu8M back.

That did it, alsa must turn it off when it sees HDMI audio or something.

Audio output must be routed automatically, what's the version of odroid-alsa now?

Ok, there is an update regarding to audio jack so it would be good to update it if you don't mind it.

I have a few questions and problems, I didn't know if I should open my own thread.

1- I'm struggling to run vu8m for Ubuntu. In the Ubuntu versions I installed with the netboot-installer, the vu8m screen does not display or the ubuntu does not turn on at all, the hdmi-lcd monitor does not show any image and even the monitor turns off. but there is no problem with downloadable ubuntu image.
The difference between the two OSes is that the boot part I installed with netboot-installer is ext4, the boot part of the one I installed with downloadable ubuntu is ext2.

2- Why are there 3 black bars that come with the vu8m, what is the purpose of use, I used them as feet and I like this shape very much. Also, I find it very useful with this structure. :)

I would like to share some pictures and videos.

To make a more comfortable viewing angle, you might need to place the black spacers to the vertically long holes and adjust the tilting angles.
I hope my poor English description can make sense.

Edit.
I've just found a more understandable picture from our WiKi pages.  ;)
You need only two black spacers.
Image

As you can see this WiKi page, there are three black spacers in the package intentionally and one of them is a spare part or a bonus.

Yes, many mechanical parts were delivered with spares, that's why you got three. This is also written on Wiki. ;)

Same with information that Vu8m support is still under way, but it's always great to have someone doing the tests ahead. ;)

Thanks for the explanation and information.
I think it's nice on four legs. :D

Edit:
I put a 15mm additional piece, when the cables are attached, it is more stable and balanced on the feet.

New fireware update to support ODROID-Vu8M is uploaded, so please refer to the Wiki and it will be updated a bit more. Not difficult, update Petitboot and install the latest kernel before adding display_vu8m to /boot/config.ini.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-m1/appli ... erequisite

Please let me know how it works for you all.

Re: Vu8m

Post by istanbulls »

It's like we went from Alpha version to Beta version.
There are some very useful developments.

1. VU8M now works standalone independent of HDMI.
2. Now we can get video from both VU8M and HDMI. active on both screens.
3. We can choose which screen we want to stay on and it works. (Settings>Display>Single Display)
4. We can change the resolutions of VU8M and HDMI displays (Settings>Display>Join Display)
5. Settings>Display>Mirror looks functional but not working!
6. VU8M works with petitbot but touch not working!
7. Touch works in Vertical Screen position, touch does not work in Horizontal Screen position.
When the screen is in Horizontal position, the touchscreen works when entering the password on the first opening screen, interesting! but we lose touch when desktop is opened.

Note:
While I was preparing the article, a few more tests came to my mind, I will do them and update my article. sorry
Thanks for testing and your feedback.
The touchscreen in Petitboot won't work until we have UI, not text menu, since the current menu does not accept touch at all. :)

I have added to the article and added pictures. for your information!

I guessed that the touchpad for petitboot would not work, but it may be necessary for those who want to use it only with VU8M display, without HDMI and keyboard-mouse.
Anyway, this situation turned out really nice, it's almost perfect now. It's annoying that only the touchscreen doesn't work on the horizontal screen, I think you're aware of this and it seems like it's going to be fixed soon.
thank you for your hard work.
