XU4 Ubuntu configured to TV native resolution = no sound

Hi

I read a bunch of other topics similar to my problem but I was unable to find a solution for my case.

I have an Odroid XU4 with Ubuntu 20.04 20210926, fresh install and updated. I'm trying to configure it to use the native resolution of my TV which is 1360x768 and I tried to do the following:

- Without doing any modifications in boot.ini, it starts fine at 1920x1080 and I see some resolutions in the control center but not 1360x768. I can change for example to 1280x720 which is more usable.
- Adding setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1360x768.bin" to boot.ini makes it starts at the desired resolution but it has no sound. In the control center it just showed 1360x768 as the only available resolution.
- Just for test, I replaced the line mentioned above with setenv videoconfig "video=HDMI-A-1:1360x768@60" and it didn't work at all, no video.
- Also for testing, I replaced it with setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1280x720.bin" and it started at 720p but also with no sound and showing this as the only available resolution in the control center.
- The last test was replace it with setenv videoconfig "video=HDMI-A-1:1280x720@60". It worked with sound and in the control center it showed the same resolutions that I could see in the first test when it was at 1920x1080.

The question is simple, is there a way to enable sound using 1360x768 as resolution?

Other devices like my PC, Xbox 360 and even a Raspberry Pi 2 run fine with this resolution with this TV. All over HDMI.

Hi,

When there is no sound, check in the last tab of pavucontrol which "profile" is selected, and if there are any to choose from.
I use HDMI output and sometimes PulseAudio switches to other outputs while changing display resolution for old games.

It has 3 options there: Stereo ouput (default), Multichannel output and off.
I changed to multichannel but it still has no sound.

Removing the line setenv videoconfig "drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1360x768.bin" from boot.ini to allow ubuntu starts at 1920x1080 with sound working, it has the same 3 options there and it works fine using both Stereo output and Multichannel.

It seems that your TV was detected as a DVI display instead of an HDMI when you enabled drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1360x768.bin.
Can you show use full "dmesg" output to find a clue?

BTW, does your TV have a native resolution of 1366x768? or 1360x768?

It is 1360x768. Pretty sure about this.
It can do 1366x768 but the image is horrible and only @30Hz

It seems that helper firmware binaries might have a problem since I could see a message of [ 4.113171] No soundcards found. :(
I think some of the binaries were generated by Intel Linux developers very long time ago and they just used some legacy VGA or DVI monitors' EDID dumped values.

Or, it might be worth to try reading the EDID information from your TV and generate your own helper binary.

But, I have a concern if your monitor has multiple EDID entries and the first one might be 1920x1080p just in case.

I have no idea indeed why there is no proper value in this list.
Do you have other Linux PC to try reading values and generate an EDID bin?

It is very hard to support you since we don't have such display devices here.

I have a spare HDD here, I installed it on my computer and installed Ubuntu 20.04 on it.
This x86-64 version detected the resolutions without any problem, here is the modes from PC:

It has some differences. With that I generated the bin file with the EDID and copied to Odroid Ubuntu but unfortunatelly it didn't changed anything.
modes showed the same resolutions I posted yesterday.

Don't worry, I'm more than happy that you are trying to help me with this.

I opened both EDID bin files (the one generated in Odroid Ubuntu and the other generated in PC Ubuntu) in a hex editor and they are exactly the same. BTW, its content is exactly the same showed by the Windows application in the Raw data section, so it seems the problem is not reading the EDID. It seems the problem is after this step.

If you have any other suggestion I can test more.

Was there sound output on your x86 Ubuntu machine?

Anyway, as you assume, the sound output issue seems not to be related the EDID.
We will try finding a way to debug.

Yes. I just had to open the sound preferences and in the Hardware tab choose HDMI as a device output. Doing this the sound worked fine.

Yes, I agree. I'm doing two questions to myself, why the native resolution didn't appear in the list using the TV EDID and why it says there is no sound card when using that preloaded EDID.

We found a clue.
Since Exynos SoC HDMI PHY can't generate 85.5Mhz pixel clock natively for your LCD panel, there was no possible resolution in /sys/class/drm/card1-HDMI-A-3/modes list.
We will look into the display device driver to check a possibility of forcing audio output path regardless of the vout mode.
It may take several days.

Wow, very good news.
Yeah, it makes sense.
I hope it will get all right. It's not a major issue for me but at the same time it's not very pleasant to work with the screen when it's not at the native resolution.

We've modified the display device driver to make 'vout' override EDID info.

Update the system and reboot. You will have Kernel 5.4.167-237 and HDMI sound should work at 1360p output.

But, many of DVI monitor users might blame you or us since they have to modify "config.ini" file manually to disable sound path after system update. :o

If we enable the sound path with a DVI monitor, there will be no display or tons of noises on the screen due to the audio data in the TMDS stream interface. Note that TMDS interface interleaves video and audio data together.
We may need to add a warning notice to somewhere in the wiki pages for DVI monitor users. But I can't find a right place at this moment.

Anyway, good to know that you can hear sound now.

Oh, I got it.
Is there no way to do the opposite? I mean, setting the audio off by default in these cases and letting people like me to enable it if needed?

I work with IT and I know it's not easy to make a decision in favor of a minority over the majority. Of course you are the responsible and know best how to resolve these situations but I also know what means when you say "users might blame". I know they will :D
