HC4 HDD power off retract count issue?

Post by NisseMan »

Does the HC4 have the same power off retract count issue that the HC1/2 has?

Since HC4 uses a native PCIe-to-SATA bridge instead of USB-to-SATA bridge, there should be no such issue until sudden power off event appears.

I can confirm this I rarely reboot it but when I do the Power-Off_Retract_Count does not go up it stays the same. (both disks are in RAID1)

The Power-Off_Retract_Count 's I have are from kernel crashing (back when setting up and using experimental kernel) and also from actual power failures.

It is interesting if I have a short power outage or blip as the power supply is a large brick and stores power for some seconds, the hc4 will stay alive for a bit but sometimes a disk will shutdown and restart and operations retried (at least on tobetters Ubuntu OS).

Code: Select all

brad@urbackup:~$ sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda | grep Power
  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 087 087 000 Old_age Always - 9833
 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 28
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 22
brad@urbackup:~$ sudo smartctl --all /dev/sdb | grep Power
  9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 087 087 000 Old_age Always - 9826
 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 32
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 26
(/dev/sda has done some work on it's own so it's hours are higher but /dev/sdb tends to be the first (and only) disk to go down in a brief power failure so it's Power-Off_Retract_Count is higher)

I installed an 12TB (omv on armbian) on my HC4, seems Power-Off_Retract_Count steps up 2-3 every day, i need to have an check on that for some time

192 Power-Off_Retract_Count -O--CK 100 100 000 - 989
