Thanks Adrian, it is usually the end result after losing a child. You drift apart and go into your own world I guess, it is what it is.

Definitely sucks mctom

Well, at least I hope you're parting on good (enough) terms and can sort your paperwork outside of a court. Wouldn't want you to make a lawyer rich in the process...

Regarding what to do next - (and I'm not qualified to give advice, but I'll do it anyway) - I'd say - try to pick up a sport to keep you healthy and give you endorfins. And I hate sport... Also, spend time with like-minded people and try to expand your circle of friends (and I dislike socializing, too!). Whatever you do, don't close yourself up. It's not healthy...

Hope the new year will bring you stability and at least some happiness!

I will be moving closer to my family and long time friends, I currently live far away from them all (11 hour drive). You hit the nail on the head with that thought.

As far as lawyers I agree, it's an amicable split. Regardless of anything she is still the mother of my children and I want her to be happy. I almost hate that I can't be angry since it's much easier to deal with versus hurt.

I hope the New Year will be good to us all.

I agree with mad_ady that sports do help, and socializing doesn't hurt either. This is exactly what we're doing here.
I wish to add, all this must be persuaded with respect and kindness to yourself. Forcing oneself to sit through a board game session is not helping. Going out for a walk may be more beneficial than hardcore gym workout in terms of mental health.
The point is to avoid discouraging oneself from beneficial activities for good. Go for things that at least feel acceptable, if not enjoyable.

I'm not remotely able to put myself in your shoes, but I did experience a few nasty breakups. Long story that doesn't matter now, the point is I couldn't cope with that myself. I ended up requiring psychiatric help and long therapy afterwards.
And I'm lucky I got persuaded into doing so, by my cardiologist. Smart beast, I've seen some 10 doctors before and had dozens of tests resulting in no solid findings. She figured out my 5 year history of hypertension and heart palpitation control was not due to any physical factors, but my appalling mental condition. Indeed after seeking psychiatric help my blood pressure eventually went back to normal and I freed myself from all prescription drugs.
The only thing I regret is spending most of my 20s being miserable, instead of going to a psychiatrist right away.
Now I have an actual, permanent heart damage due to originally untreated hypertension, thanks to a few wrong women in my life. This stuff is real and ought to be treated seriously.

Happy new year, everyone! I wish I could treat you all with double shots of Żubrówka. ;)

I find if I keep my mind occupied I think less about all my family issues. Just should have picked less expensive hobbies, like retro game collecting:

$430,000 for a SEGA Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog  Wow! Hmm, maybe I should stick with coins.

There are 8 guys in my department, one tested positive for covid, another was his apprentice, both are in quarantine. Two guys that work 8hr days are very sick and getting tested today, probably not going to be good news since they were in lots of contact with the guy that tested positive.
Our team of 8 is now down to 4 in a department that is supposed to be manned 24/7.

Karl Jobst has made a few reports on the recent retro games price inflation, which appears to be an artificial speculation bubble.
I dunno, I seldom play games these days, but when I do it's either one of excellent Linux titles or some nostalgic classics for $5 on GOG (Which are even cheaper for us in Poland).

Perhaps it's time to notify the management your department may struggle with its tasks in the coming days. The managements always seems so surprised that undermanned projects fail.
And stay healthy, above all.

I saw a doctor a few days ago and she gave me a referral to a hospital. Even worse, to a lung disease ward. And it's not because of Covid, but I hope I won't end up getting infected over there.

At least war is good for production and economy. The component shortage would end and we'd be able to baldly go into the apocalypse with a bunch of SBC's.

Speaking of economy: Drawer guides have reasonable and similar prices up to 700mm. I was after 750mm ones, where price goes 5x higher.

Let's blame it on the shortage!

Anyway I guess my drawers simply won't open all the way, screw that.

Getting similar here at the moment, with a little wind(50kmh with gusts to 70 so nothing major) so in effect to me it's just normal winter weather, nothing special.

However the locals are in a panic and everything got closed early today.

edit: the updated forecast now says possible 18inches by morning. however that is still not an amount to panic over.

Once I was genuinely interested to find a place in Europe where the annual temperature amplitude is the lowest. I prefer mild winters, but above all, cold summers.
Turns out it's exactly where I live.

I got new glasses a couple months ago, bifocal. The reading lens was focused almost 3 feet away. I spend a good deal of my time at a bench reading prints and looking at components, so I took them back. Now I'm trying them again, the focus is about 18 inches, good, but through a pretty narrow slit. I guess I'll try to get used to them, but I hate them.

It seems to be a Canadian thing to mix and match imperial and metric measurements.

It's officially metric here, but with some things it gets a little random as to what units get used.

I think with snow some of that is just trying to get the smaller sounding number, since 18 of something sounds so much better then 45 of something.

I was thinking it may be a Canadian thing since we share boarders, I prefer metric measurements (specifically millimeters/centimeters) but imperial for everything else.

I loath fractional inches, 0.5mm is so much nicer than 0.0197 inch.

Everything is fine as long as mile has a fixed definition. On my 2009 road trip to Norway, before smartphone era, I had to ask for directions sometimes. Then I learned one mile is 10km up there.

And given that's one of the most expensive countries in the world, it was really handy to be armed with lots of Polish vodka. They still have partial prohibition over there. We traded vodka for an emergency car fix.

With inflation out of control here and no end to it in sight, I suspect we will soon be adopting new units of measure ...

Dollars and change will be replaced with "Goat" and "Chicken". I also expect "Jug of Whisky" to become a standard for long distance transactions where its impractical to send Goat or Chicken.

So what do you guys invest in? I'm gradually transferring my savings into CZK account.
Most people around here (Inflation ~8%) started investing in properties, but it's too late for me, the price has already doubled.

So far my best investment were Raspberry Pis, but that was sheer luck.

Turkey is a terrible asset, it has 70% inflation already, har har.

For a few days my Philips TV has started to misbehave. The ambilight is all flickery and disruptive when watching. I thought some power-related transistor might be on the fritz (the rest of the TV works fine). So I went into the ambilight menu to turn it off and I noticed it was set to follow audio, not video.... Must have been those meddling kids... but now it works once again!

Don't blame everything on kids. There is one in a billion chance a space radiation particle got through and flipped a bit in EEPROM :D
Something I need to harden all my designs against, but it is speculated it does happen on ground from time to time. Most of the times goes unnoticed, but I think at least one plane crash is blamed on this (a sensor reading off by exactly 2048, or something like that).

I thought some power-related transistor might be on the fritz (the rest of the TV works fine).
I have never seen ambilight in action actually ;) but if each LED can change the color independently, transistors are most commonly inside the individual LEDs. Along with PWM drivers!

Why have kids in the first place if I can't blame everything on them? Image

Also, I'll have you know, they make excellent testers: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.zdnet. ... -two-kids/

True, that is a remarkable feature of kids. I prefer a cat, though, which is a capable tester as well:

Cats are fantastic at testing patience. We bought a cucumber to place on the kitchen table as a deterrent only to find both of ours are completely comfortable with cucumbers.
I suggested maybe we're supposed to beat them with the cucumber to make them afraid of it, but that got voted down.

Cucumbers work only as a jump scare, when they seemingly appear out of nowhere. In viral videos people usually place cucumbers behind a cat while it's eating.
That's a bad practice, as cats may be traumatized and develop feeding-related anxiety.

I can't help you with cats going where they're not supposed to, but I did train my cat to not scratch anything but his scratching post, by positive feedback. He simply gets a snack each time he uses it (and someone is around to offer it). No furniture damage ever since.
Studies (Sapolsky) show dopamine levels in mammals skyrocket when reward isn't certain. This is what pushes hunters, or athletes, to their limits. That's why he gets a random amount of treats (or none).

I hope you're doing okay at your work!

So, if I may show off, someone has actually forked pistackmon :D Whatever the reason, I'm excited.

Anyone could recommend a good read about NPU/TPU/ AI coprocessor things?
It seems all I can find online is "it's a magic box that wizards use to do AI magic".
"Also, Google made it, so bow before this marvel of technology."
And a few closed source examples, all of which detect predefined objects on pictures.

I'd be interested in understanding what it does in greater detail, and see if I can come up with some interesting uses, rather than doing stuff my mind is perfectly capable of..

You could check out the community projects for Nvidia, perhaps not as generic as you are looking for but it's something.

Thanks, @rooted, that is a nice collection to browse through, that yet again proved to me it's all about detecting the image features.
One guy attempted guitar effects, that's clever.

I was hoping it could be used to something quite unexpected, just like GPUs were exploited to crack encryption back in the day of original Xbox I think.
I see it is well capable of matrix multiplication, to evaluate .. well, neural networks. What else could I have expected :D
I was thinking that could somehow speed up electronics simulations, and if it could do LU factorization, then indeed this is something worth looking into.

Anyway, I blindly filled the form on Radxa github page and apparently was granted a CM3 for free, so I was wondering if thant NPU thing is gonna be of any use. Maybe not today, but we'll see.

At the end of 2020, I had two things on my list to achieve the following year: NPU and FPGA. Neither materialized. Hopefully plans work out better this year!

FPGA would be awesome to learn.

I've been hoping since before the N1 was introduced hardkernel would release a device with a decent NPU and MIPI.
