ChromiumOS Image showcase [Release] r0.6

Post by AreaScout »

    Hello Community !

    Image
Ho Ho Ho, I want to showcase my current work/porting affords of ChromiumOS to the ODROID N2(+)/HC4, the last six weeks I spend a lot of hours to learn the build system of ChromiumOS which is based on Gentoo Linux ebuild system and how to be able to boot from an image which has a partition configuration like this:

      Code: Select all

      # start size part contents
      # 0 1 PMBR (Boot GUID: 84411D30-8987-A846-9AA7-E60DFB7A3AF4)
      # 1 1 Pri GPT header
      # 2 32 Pri GPT table

There was only one way for me to do this easily, so I had to use Petitboot, so how does this work ?

First of all as you maybe already know with Petitboot you can boot from USB devices, eMMC and SD and so this ChromiumOS Image is able to do so, the next challenge was to use a kernel which is able to boot on multiple odroid devices, I chose to use tobetter's 5.15 kernel tree which is capable to do so and it has VU5A/7A touch screen support which is working and the OS side onscreen keyboard works completely smooth.

      Update Petitboot:

I know that with older Petitboot on SPI flash you are not able to boot this image, so you have to update it

For N2+ models please download this recovery image http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/pe ... 112.img.xz flash it on SD card and follow this procedure

For older N2 models, please download this recovery image http://ppa.linuxfactory.or.kr/images/pe ... 201112.img flash it on SD card and follow this procedure

      https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-n2/os_im ... or_upgrade

      Install ChromiumOS

      DOWNLOAD CHROMIUMOS r0.6

      Newest ->DOWNLOAD CHROMIUMOS r0.7

      SSH Username: chronos
      SSH Password: odroid

Please follow the download link above and use etcher to flash the image on either USB-Stick, USB-HDD, eMMC or SD - Toggle the boot mode switch to SPI mode (put it to left side) and boot

Google API-Keys are needed to run this image !! We have tried to buy some API-Keys to make it easier for you to use it but we where not be able to get any, we were only referred to this site to generate some

      https://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/api-keys

If you have API-Keys (sorry for this terrible experience) you have to append it to the end of this file /etc/chrome_dev.conf variables for it are already in (use SSH to edit it), do not use quotation marks -> reboot and it should work (sorry not guarantied as Justin also had problems with it :( )

      What can you expect:

Working full blown Operating System, with in detail:
      • Audio Playback
      • Video Playback
      • Hardware Cursor support
      • Full WLAN/LAN support
      • Gamecontroller support USB and Bluetooth
      Issues:

Flickering control panel if there is no video or Webgl running in background

So guys, I hope some of you will find it useful, it shows that it's possible to run this OS on ODROID boards, it runs fast it is a great OS it's responsive and it's usable, maybe this will turn out to something more in the future but as of now the biggest hurdle I think are the API-Keys, I hope you enjoy it anyway ! In this sense and many thanks for the support from HK to be more accurate from Justin and Dongjin, they are doing great job 👍

      Daniel

This is awesome, has tobetter or odroid made a video of it in action?

The API thing isn't a big deal for a lot of people as they already have an account setup due to the Kodi YouTube add-on needing to use a personal API key as well

Great job, as usual! Being bootable by petitboot will give it more traction, too!

But it needs 3 kernels? Why?!

One is for backup and the other I don't know, I am sure not every partition is used by the OS, it depends on which hardware it's running too, one very small partition is for error and boot flags only, but the partition layout is always the same for all images, you can see it if you download official (recovery) images and open it up with 7zip

Thanks for your help and tips but I still can't login.
It doesn't complain about the api key, when I don't save the api key, it asks for the api key registration when chromium os is first opened. I think there is another problem but I don't understand what :(

Hmm, am I the only one who can use this image ? It can't be ...

Did you subscribe to chromium-dev mailing list ? (chromium-dev@chromium.org)

Also I wrote to this group and asked for verification, I didn't get an answer but maybe they add me somehow somewhere https://groups.google.com/u/0/a/chromiu ... staccounts

Also this is why we tried to buy some keys:

Signing in to Chromium is restricted
Signing in to Chromium requires an OAuth 2.0 token for authentication. As this OAuth 2.0 token gives access to various Google services that handle user data (e.g. Chrome sync), for security and privacy reasons the generation of this OAuth 2.0 token is restricted. This means that signing in to Chromium is restricted (as the OAuth 2.0 token cannot be generated). In order to sign in to Chromium builds, please add your test account to google-browser-signin-testaccounts@chromium.org (accounts in this group are allowed to get access tokens bypassing the restriction above).

Thanks again for everything. I'm inside now. The problem occurred because I didn't restrict the api key.

              My Experiences:
1080p videos flow like butter in the browser. Writing in the browser is not very fluent, but not bad, quite useful. I think I will test until the morning today, I will relay my experiences again.
Can we install smplayer as in ubuntu?

Thank you guys! Finally, I could login successfully after restricting several APIs too.
I'm writing this reply on my N2+ powered ChromeBox with a very recent Kernel 5.15.1 !
Santa already came to Korea from Austria. ;)

While playing a 1080p clip on Youtube, I can feel that video play back is very silky smooth.
CPU usage seems to be slightly higher since CPU decoding + GPU rendering combination works though.

Hardware accelerated WebGL Aquarium shows around 30~35FPS in full screen mode (pressing F11 key) at default 500 fishes on a 1080p/60hz HDMI monitor.
I love its rendering performance. Very impressive experience. 8-)
Note that the screenshot mode slows down it to ~20FPS temporarily.

BTW, typing characters with a USB keyboard is quite slow as @istanbulls reported.

I am happy that it works for you guys ! 🥂✨

I will investigate the issue with the keyboard 👨‍🎓 -> did anyone test with Bluetooth Keyboard, I don't own one ?

                @istanbulls

No sorry, if we would able to turn ChromiumOS into ChromeOS then we could enable Linux support with our favorite sudo apt install package manager like in this video

                Regards,

Thank you, I also managed to log in, youtube works well and I still have to discover other facilities.

I mention that I have no experience in chromeOS.

I have a question about what type of partition ChromeOS recognizes for two reasons:
1 left space on the unformatted 32Gb mmc and
2 I inserted two sticks with fat32 and ntfs and it doesn't see them
                Thanks!

Does the STATE partition ever expand?

I know little about ChromiumOS . The wiki page said : Support for a Linux terminal and applications, known as Project Crostini,[11] was released to the stable channel in 2018 with Chrome OS 69. This was made possible via a lightweight Linux kernel that runs containers inside a virtual machine.

                Is that true ?

Yes that's called Crostini and it's a VM running a Linux kernel, I am still on a learning curve on that and uncertain for some parts of it, I hope I can deliver a working Crostini Linux layer soon

                  @all

I have added a new Image to download, please follow the link in the first post ChromiumOS 0.7

                      What's new ?
                        • Diagnostic tool is now working
                        • Typing characters inside the browser is not slow anymore (still on login screen)
                        • Used a little bit older Chromium Browser UI which fits better and is recommended for the underlaying OS version, it should be overall more stable and usable now
                        • Resizing of the stateful partition is now working
                        Have fun

P.S.: Logon is a little bit lame now, it takes longer than before

Try positioning the BT dongle away from the usb3 ports to avoid interference. Use a usb2 extension cable or a usb-otg cable.
