SAE and metric are a must.
I intend to end this standards war!

Of course, this will be done by introducing a new standard. My new inter-galactic standard unit of measure will be based, not on water as other failed standards are, but on BACON!
I'm in, any excuse to get more tools!

AT&T had a deal for $35/month.
Check the fine print! There are lots of low cost "deals". What they don't advertise is the low data cap. The $35 deal ends up being $100+ per month in overage charges if you do anything other than just check email.

P.S.
I am now certain this Black Friday is just a garage sale! All year I have been watching prices on certain items in anticipation of the holiday sales. The only difference between earlier this year and now is that the same price now has "Black Friday Deal" labeled over it on Amazon.
Yeah I was paying $150 for 1000/35 unlimited, knocked it down to 500/12 and I'm paying $100. I live in a relatively large city and it's almost a monopoly, there's Cox DOCSIS which I have and AT&T which is 100mbps DSL.

$50 of my bill is just for unlimited data. It's freaking ridiculous, I could switch to Starlink but that $500 equipment fee is just too much.

Those are nice chrome sockets. I buy most my steel tools at Harbor Freight. Yeah, it's Chinese steel, I know, but Pittsburg sux anyways and my sockets are all color coded. It's almost easier for me to remember the gold socket is for Volvo tires than it's 19mm. LOL

Pittsburgh combination wrenches are actually nice tools, I break chinesium sockets pretty fast though. I got a set of Pittsburgh combination wrenches for the new work set because the couple random ones I have are tough.

Absolutely, 1/2" drive impact sockets are great for durability and by nature even cheap ones are more than tough enough.
There are times when a regular socket is necessary, when there's not enough clearance between the fastener and an obstacle for the thicker walls so it's not a bad idea to have 3/8" drive in regular sockets and common (10,11,13,14,15,19) in 1/2" drive regular sockets too.

What kind of battery powered tools do you use? I've got a bunch of Rigid Octane stuff that has been great, all of the ones I have included a lifetime warranty even on the batteries.

My absolute favorite is the 1/2" impact and the 1/4" driver, I use the hell out of them both.

Honestly, none, since I have a small dedicated shop I have a good size compressor so all my tools are pneumatic, up to a 3/4" drive impact.

What an irony to pay GOG in USD. I found out I could have paid in PLN only after the purchase.

GOG games are an excellent Christmas gift ideas for people born in 1950-1970. Games that were released when they were in their 20s-40s are probably the most memorable.
I often buy games for my dad. Those are DRM free, so I usually give them on a nice looking pendrive.

Yeah you can't beat pneumatic if you have a good compressor.

I still highly recommend keeping a good 1/2" cordless or 12v impact in your vehicle, saves so much aggravation to already aggravating circumstances when you have a flat.

Lol, I don't carry a spare tire at all. We have a pretty strict yearly safety inspection where I live so it's uncommon for any vehicle to have a catastrophic tire failure. My spare tire is a small toolbox with a tire plugging kit and a foot pump. So far I have been lucky enough that I haven't lost a tire to road debris.

I lose several tires a year here in Florida, they don't keep the roads clean.

Hell I got a new tire because the "old" tire got a nail too close to the sidewall to be patched and two months later I got a nail in the new tire in the same exact spot.

Ryobi for me. Even got the 40V electric lawnmower. Power was going off here alot so I got the 300 watt power inverter for the 40V battery and the thing outputs sine wave and has a USB-C port with 60 watt PD. It's better than the UPS I have my computer plugged into. :o

Man, they have an HP Omen (25 in stock actually) at Micro Center that's almost like the System76 for only $1400

Intel Core i7 11th Gen 11800H 2.3GHz Processor
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6
16GB DDR4-3200 RAM
1TB Solid State Drive
Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
Multi-Format SD Media Card Reader
10/100/1000 Network
Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 (2x2)+Bluetooth 5.2 Combo
17.3" Full HD IPS Micro-Edge Anti-Glare Low Blue Light 144Hz Display

Funny thing is I just don't seem to care about saving $1200. I REALLY REALLY just wanted a good Linux laptop. Oh well... :(

My laptop is an older refurbished Dell E6420. I run Mint on it and everything is perfect, it was available in a variety of i5 & i7 processors (mine is an i7 @ I think 2.3ghz). GPU is fine for me but would be disappointing to some.
They're dirt cheap and repairable too, and the Harddrive bay opens quickly out of the side.

I run Manjaro on my HP ProBook and everything works great except the fingerprint scanner, my laptop isn't anything special so something with more advanced hardware may be different.

Ryobi makes some nice tools which are reasonably priced, good choice.

Wow, the specs are so impressive you could probably run Windows on it! :D

I switched to Dell Wyse 5070 recently, with Manjaro i3. Works great AND has a native RS232 port for my printer!
It even is capable of some 16fps in the most advanced game in existence, 0ad.

I'm really wanting something with lots of cores so I can beat all you l33t h@X0rz to the punch with an ARMv9 build of Ubuntu for the Odroid N3++ (or whatever they call it.) You know, just so I can say "FIRST!" I might go with a i9 desktop instead though. Or maybe something I can put multiple video cards in for GPU cryptocurrency mining. I can wait though, 11th gen Intel machines will only get cheaper.

I think I know what you mean. My first cluster of 6x Pi4 I'm currently selling out hasn't seen much action, but certainly was nice to have. ;)
I am dead serious with implementing my Spice optimizer / Worst Case Analysis tool, as I do all that by hand all the time. Many people in the industry, doing the very same, just shrug and say it must be impossible if LTspice can't do that for you.
I just.. need to finish all that stuff I'm working on :D

And the new cluster would be something with SoCs on the bottom, or easily cooled by a common heatsink otherwise. That leaves me with either N2+ or MC1.

The guy sells many U3s for 0,25$. :)
(Didn't want to annoy that guy selling old odroids in another thread)
The seller is clueless about them, "look unused" to him, but I noticed a wire soldered on the bottom of the demo unit.
It isn't how they were made, is it?

The Odroid SmartPower 3 arrived and it works great, as expected. I also got a PinePower and man, that thing has already taken over my desk. The QC 3.0 port does 9V for my DeX dock. The USB-C port does 65 watt PD which "super fast" charges my Samsung S20 FE. And the wireless charger on top is just the right size for my new Z Flip 3 when it's folded in half, like they were made for each other. I've replaced three power supplies with one! It's really very slick (sorry to plug a competitor)

That may be the sole reason why you'll toss it away in next two years. Unless you're planning to do it anyway, then nothing wrong with that. ;)
I charged my Huawei through a 3m USB cable to deliberately slow down the process. After 5 or 6 years still holds like new!

Hmm... Not really a direct competitor, as PinePower is a charging station and not a power supply. You can't even set a voltage on this ;)

I'll pass on U3s. I set a sniper for $2 just for poops and laughs, but I need way more cores to beat InsideJob
Or perhaps it will be just right for my Granpa Videophone project? Hmm I think I'll bid $3 then!

I've got a picture around here somewhere of the battery on my S8+ swelling so much it half popped the back cover off the phone. My new Z Flip 3 has a feature where it limits the max charge to 85% so hopefully won't have the same problem. That's also one of the things I heard System76 was developing for Linux (battery charge limiter) actually... but anywho.

Look at

cd /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/ && grep . *

on any laptop and you should see charge_full is only ~90% of charge_full_design.

You would think the PinePower would have higher output Qi than 10W being the rest of the ports are so powerful. Certainly a device I could use, thanks for reminding me it exists.

*Edit*
Out of stock, will keep an eye out (since I've been wanting to grab their Pinecil also) and get them both.

The price is good if you're not paying for shipping and import to EU, that is correct.
Otherwise I'm into more straightforward tools than a soldering iron with an actual operating system of its own :D

Back in the university we had a test on microcontroller and microprocessor course. The question was: "Do electric kettles have microcontrollers?". Possible answers included:
- Yes,
- No,
- Fortunately not,
- not yet...

And here we are.

I thought that was the battery condition. INXI makes the info more readable:

$ cat energy_full
61368000
$ cat energy_full_design
75998000
$ inxi -Bxxx
Battery: ID-1: BAT0 charge: 61.4 Wh condition: 61.4/76.0 Wh (81%) volts: 15.8/15.8 model: ASUSTeK ASUS Battery
type: Li-ion serial: N/A status: Not charging

I wonder what this does tho:
$ cat charge_control_end_threshold
100

Nothing wrong with a fat check, but you are salary no?
No, I'm an electrician. The 12hr schedule is pretty cool though. Based on a two week schedule I get 4 hrs straight time given to me, paid lunches, and 8 hrs overtime guaranteed.

And now for something completely different... I just paid $350 for this on eBay:

It's an addiction. I literally can't stop myself from buying old coins. PCGS price guide is $550 though, so I'm not losing money. ;)

My dad was collecting US dimes for many years. He's got hundreds of these. He lost interest when his eyesight worsened, though. That's no fun collecting items you can't see properly.

So about two months ago I gave him my collection of banknotes, including some 200 items, mostly UNC, from 40+ exotic countries.
Now for Christmas he demands more pages for this album, so I guess it worked. :)

I've been collecting coins since I was a kid, so not likely I'll get into pocket watches. Not to brag (well, maybe a little) but one of my discoveries was even on the front page of Numismatic News.

Anywho, I like coins with a bit of a story. The 1808 half cent above has a weird looking second 8. It was made from the little 0 on the reverse (says 1/200) being punched into the die twice. Don't know if the guy at the mint lost his 8 punch or what but...

Here's another interesting coin I recently bought for $250, a "No Cents" nickel:

Image

Story here is this was the first year of a new design and the reverse just has the roman numeral V on it. So some, shall we say, "enterprising" (or thieving) individuals gold plated them and started passing them off as the new $5 gold piece. Needless to say, the "Cents" was added to the coin the same year. :D

I got some stuff from AST Labs today, WOW, very nice. One of the items I ordered was super nice meter lead extension set but I messed up and got male-male ends so I just made another order and threw a 4 pack of female banana to alligator adapters on it so I can use it as a jumper lead set or alligator lead set. Lemonade from Lemons!

Managed to fix a set of old (15 years?) and cheap Xmas lights that barely turned. Changed a swollen capacitor, and had to resolder all the (hair thin) wires to the PCB. Took an hour, but seeing all leds working again brought me great joy!

There's something about fighting entropy that I like :)

Oh, if you never hear from me again, it means my fix messed up and ended burning down the house...

It's more like a chronic disease that has to be treated on a regular basis. This week's cure cost me $275:

Image

Historians apparently still can't agree on the cause of people hoarding gold, silver and nickel in 1864, but fact is there wasn't enough coinage for daily commerce. Businesses were using postage stamps and making their own exchange tokens to compensate. So the government decided to change the composition of the cent from 88% copper and 12% nickel to 95% copper and 5% tin/zinc. They also made the blanks thinner.

My personal theory is fairly simple, people aren't stupid. The Coinage Act of 1834 reduced the weight of gold coins and the coinage act of 1853 reduced the weight of silver coins. People expected them to reduce the weight of nickel coins too. Of course, they were wrong, the government eliminated the nickel in cents entirely.

Have you got any WW2 coins made from unusual materials? I've seen steel coins in a museum in Finland. Not to mention their ancient stone tokens, that inflated into quarter-ton blocks at some point.

The inflation in Poland is booming as we speak, close to 8% now. It was anticipated, since 2015 the government policy is helicopter money and buying reelections among the poorest and the least educated.
I exchanged some of my saving to CZK. Now I've got another price trend to keep an eye on

and buying reelections among the poorest and the least educated.
This makes me sad (happens here since forever; I thought it was a local, or Balcans issue, but it seems to be worldwide). Without education, I fear democracy is a failed experiment. Even in the greek society only a few had a right to vote.

If I were to reform society, I'd introduce mandatory civil education courses and tests before each election. If you fail to see the big picture, you don't get to vote. Maybe AI can develop an analogue for the Turing test that people can take to show they are working together. That way, maybe education would gain some value... The problem is - the educated ones feel unrepresented and don't go to vote...

Enough ranting from me...

Out of my frustration I was thinking "how to fix everything" and I guess if there was a working political system, it would have been widely adopted by now.

The problem here, and in Romania I believe, is that people don't know how to vote. Democracy is understood as selecting the ruling party for next 4 years. Usually the general atmosphere around all elections is that there are two parties to choose from, because "all the rest will lose anyway". That's what my grandpa says.
People actually think there must be the "winner", a party with absolute majority in the parliament. That has always been the case (especially when there was one party to choose from), and for any reason nobody contests that idea, ever!
In practice, if any party has majority in Parliament, the leader of the party is an elected dictator.
That is the problem.

They won by the sheer promise of subsidizing every child with 500 PLN a month. That's helicopter money, right there. They had an overwhelming success in elections, and there was a major vodka shortage after first "500+" money was paid out.
Many manual laborers quit their jobs altogether, because they have 4 kids and they earned 2000 PLN before all that. There was a shortage of construction workers for this reason.
Of course they'll vote the same party again, till the end of time.

I have an easy fix for that: During elections, when parliament members are selected among local politicians, there shall be no indications about who belongs to which party. So people cannot mindlessly vote for a party, and would be forced to actually know a particular candidate. Or vote at random, which will render their votes statistically insignificant.

Even better, force the voters to write the full name of the candidate they vote for, so votes won't be biased by the list order (which is the case now).
Also the 20-some percent that are unable to clearly write a name of a candidate, really shouldn't take part in the elections.

Quick question: Does eMMC v0.5 taken from XU4 will work with any eMMC enabled Odroid? Of course with proper OS image burned on it.

I bought a 1943 steel cent this week too, PCGS MS66.

What's interesting though are the WW2 nickels which the government made out of 35% SILVER. Nickel is more valuable than silver to the war machine.
