HDD for Download Machine

Post by rockla »

I'm currently looking for external HDD 2.5 inches with 4/5 TB capactity.

My use case is :-

* Connect to Odroid N2+/HC4 and use it as download machine.
* Device is used in headless mode (ubuntu server)with plex running on it.
* Device would be running 24x7 for anytime access within network .
* Data stored on this drive is not important so no RAID and all.
* HDD speeds would be limited to 100MB due to device limitation

Please recommend which model would suit be better WD My Passport Portable or Seagate One Touch or any other alternative ?

It may depend on how long you expect the drive to be spinning per day. WD green is designed to be mostly sleeping, and have a rather high spin up time (~10s). WD purple are good general-purpose disks. WD reds are not for this use case.

I recently cracked open my 3TB WD Passport thinking maybe I could use the drive in my H2+ and it was a blue. The USB 3.0 connector was soldered on too so couldn't attach a SATA cable. I was thinking it'd be a normal drive in there with a SATA to USB bridge.

As far as I experienced with some external/internal 2.5inch HDDs, its reliability was worse than 3.5inch ones obviously.
Heavily consider using a good NAS 3.5" HDD if you really want to run it 24x7 for a few years.

Those ironwolf Nas drive are expensive.

Since it's 24x7 download machine it would be reading from torrent client to seed assuming that counts under spin time?

It depends... If you leave it seeding, then yes, it will be spun-up. I personally stop seeding when I reach a ratio of 2, and since I'm seldomly downloading, my drive is mostly asleep.
Have a 3TB WD Green that has been running for about 10 years now...

Yes also since i dont care about data loss.

Does the extra cost of IronWolf NAS really justifies ? OR should i just get a 5 TB external HDD which are cheaper or you wont advise for external HDD ?

I wouldn't go for Ironwolf, nor WD Red. They're for high performance systems, high IO, not typical of NAS. It will work, but you won't feel the difference to a green WD, for instance. Invest the difference in higher capacity instead.

External HDDs should have removable SATA controller, so you should be able to use it as a sata drive, but it seems not all are created equal, as InsideJob found out. Search online for a teardown before buying.

There's an option in Deluge to set up RAM cache both for download and upload, that may or may not reduce HDD spin time.

Then why hoarding 4TB of it in the first place

If this is the case I'd get the cheapest one available and not overthink it.

yep, "cheapest one available" is the way, unlike many other products.
