Led stripe connect it to GPIO ports

Post by amibumping »

Hi, I own an HC4, and I'm in love with it.

Now I am looking the way for connect a led stripe to it, in order to achieve the known as ambilight effect.

Almost everyone uses Raspberry PI to that use, but since the HC4 also have some GPIO pins, I wonder if it can recognice a led stripe, or it need some controllers.

Is there another way to connect it to the HC4, with Arduino I don't know..

Thank you!

Hi!

So what exactly are you after, just a LED stripe glowing all the time when your HC4 is on, or something else?

If this is the case, you could get a piece of 12V LED strip and wire it to the board somehow - it supports 3,5" HDDs so must have 12V regulation somewhere.

Are you comfortable with soldering?

Something else, is not just to glow all the time, the odroid will receive the avr signal through a video capture device, and with Hyperion it will glow the leds according to the imagen on the tv.

It follows this diagram:

I'm not quite comfortable with soldering..

Then I think this might be out of your reach. HC4 does have GPIO pins, but just enough for optional OLED display.

It shouldn't be surprising that this device, made with a specific purpose in mind, has limited number of GPIOs.

I believe this could be done but would require serious amount of work, both in software and hardware. And without soldering soldering skills, don't get me wrong but there are plenty of simpler projects you could practice on.

Ok thank you, it was just for saving some money and another device on the room.

Thank you anyway!

A few years ago, some people enjoyed building an Ambilight system on a 4K TV with the old ODROID-C2.

What about using the USB-IO board to get some more GPIO involved?

Emulated SPI translation on the USB-IO board was not simple.
So we used a cheaper and simpler Arduino board when we wrote this article five years ago. Time is always flying. :o

I recommend using an esp8266 running wLED firmware and the Hyperion Kodi add-on, this allows for wireless functionality between the esp8266 and the HC4.

Thank you all for your answers, very gratefull.

But I feel a bit overwhelmed for all the new information, I am really a newbie with all that tiny boards, but I will give it a chance.

By running wireless the esp8266 and hc4 do I need a wifi module for the hc4?

If you have a WiFi network at home, and your HC4 is connected to the same network via ethernet, this should be enough. :)
