XU4 USB 3.0 not working and no power

Post by Petro »

Hi,

I have ODROID-XU4 with USB 3.0 ports problem. USB 2.0 port works fine, but USB 3.0 does not work at all, even as USB 2.0, as there is no power.

USB 3 root hub does not send enable signal to USB protection circuits. These circuits signal that there is no overcurrent (OVERCURB and OVERCURC are high), but hub keeps PWRENB and PWRENC low. During startup, hub send a few times short high pulses to enable protection circtuits, but they are kept off after that.
My guess is that there is something with USN root hub configuration, which is kept on IS25L Q512B (u11) memory circuit.

Could you please help? There is no open-source documentation on the hub, so I have a dead end.

Can you show us "lsusb" and "lsusb -t" outputs first?

Sorry for the delay.

USB 3.0 has no power on connectors and here is the output:

The on-board hub controller GL3521 doesn't exist.
It seems to be damaged by unknown electrical shock probably.

Contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this post.
She will help your RMA process within a couple of working days if you purchased the board from us directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor/reseller.

Funny thing, I work for your distributor) And it looks like our problem is not unique any more: viewtopic.php?f=97&t=34673

Our client returned this XU4 to us because of this problem.
GL3521 is fine as during start-up the power on USB 3 is shortly on (mouse LED blinks). So processor is able to turn the hub on and the hub can turn the protection circuites as well. However, there is some faulty logic, which makes hub turn off the power after initialisation.
Our guess is that the configuration firmware on the flash IC for USB hub is faulty. Can you send me the binary so I can reflash the memory? Maybe it can solve the problem.

Ahh... you are our official partner. Nice to meet you virtually. :)

We've shipped over 200,000 XU4 series and we could see several USB hub IC defectives so far. Therefore, I think the failure rate is not so high.
The USB hub controller firmware has been flashed and tested in our manufacturing process.
If the controller is not detected, there is no way to flash the firmware.

Hello @odroid. I have the same problem with my XU4. Even the results of lsusb are the exact same. I noticed that the inductor L15 is broken off on the board. According to the schematic I found, L15 is for powering the hub controller. Is there any chance that replacing it will solve the issue?

There were a couple of users who broke the inductor accidentally and replaced it successfully.
