Home Cloud HC2 / HC4

Post by retfire »

According to your product page for the HC2:
We guarantee the production of ODROID-HC2 to the End of 2021, but expect to continue production long after.
However, at the top of the page, it says you've discontinued it:
<Last batch>

Once it is sold out, this product will be discontinued.
What changed in expectations? Why aren't there any more batches for the next two months? It still seems to be popular.

The HC4 looks like a great, new product but I don't really like the "toaster" design. From what I've seen the drives wobble around. I would prefer an enclosure that allowed for more secure, horizontal placement and an optional fan. Maybe that's something that could be done with a 3D printer.

It wasn't HK being deceptive, the component market caused the HC2 to EOL early.

Sorry for the bad news.

The main reason why we need to shorten the HC2 life cycle is the key components shortage problem.
The USB 3.0 to SATA bridge controller JMS578 lead time is near 50 weeks these days.
It means we can make the HC2 next production batch in '2022 October or November.
Therefore, we have to discontinue it earlier. :(

I see. Thank you for the explanation. I figured it was because of the shortage but I wondered which part was the problem.

Note that there are some designs on the C4 subforum for alternate cases. A notable one is Hominid's unofficial Cloudshell4.
