How to install comunication apps

Post by miroshi »

Hi to all,

I try to install few communication apps on my N2+. I have no problems on normal Linux Mint, but looks like here are problems.
I want to use Skype, Zoom, MS Teams and optionally Viber.

Is this even possible on Ubuntu Mate or Armbian or Manjaro?

Regards!

From my experience, there's no way to use Skype or MS Teams, as neither is open source, and neither has (Linux) ARM builds available anywhere.
The rest probably don't support Linux either.

I use pidgin, a quite old "universal" chat client. It usually supports only basic functionalities, a text chat, but the support completeness depends on a plugin quality. There is a Skype plugin, but I'd guess that voice calls won't work anyhow.

It's the same old story, commercial products are not supported on such a niche market as ARM-based Linux computers.

Thank you!
Looks like I will have to try the web based applications. On first try they didn't like the Firefox, but there is still hope for Chromium.
I will try few test calls and will share my experience.

Regards!

Web based Teams really should work. I didn't test it thoroughly, because I had no way to plug in the microphone to Odriod.
Looks like your software selection isn't too keen on anything else than Android.

I wonder if the N2+ can handle Google Meet with a whole 30 people classroom in a browser. On H2 it eats up about 50% CPU... Hard to test without compromising my kids classes...

My little kid miss few classes during my tests :) but it was for the kids-garden so was not a problem. As a results I had problems with every OS except Ubuntu Mate. On Andorid, Armbian, may be on Manjaro also there was a problem with the microphone.
So at the end I put Mate on my MMC.

PS - my tests were with Zoom.

Thanks for the feedback! I won't be able to test, because I risk getting lynched by my wife if it doesn't work
