[SOLVED] Odroid N2+ Does Not Power Off...

Post by danielbisque »

My company receives Odroid N2+ computers each month that are packaged inside a product we sell.

With the latest shipment of Odroid N2+ computers we received, the none of the computers completely turn off when shut down from Linux.

The computer is running Linux 18.04.3 LTS.
The power supply voltage is 12.11 V DC
PWR LED is fully illuminated.
SYS LED flashes blue.
Click Menu > Turn Off The Device > Shut Down
PWR LED is now partially illuminated.
SYS LED no longer flashes.

Normal LEDs:

Dim PWR LED after shut down:

Normally, when power is turned off, the PWR LED is not illuminated.

Here is the Linux log from one of the computers:

Any advice on how to resolve this behavior is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Dan

Do you get the same behavior when HDMI is disconnected? Could be power from HDMI.

Yes, same behavior occurs when the HDMI is disconnected. PWR LED is dim, but the computer does not fully shutdown.

(Note this behavior is new, and definitely did not exist in any of the several dozen N2+ units we previously have received to date).

Were the previous N2+ devices using the same OS image?

Seems that this issue came with rev0.5. See here in the revision history!
To lower the electrical stress to the GL3523 hub controller, the GL3523 power source has changed to 5V from 3.3V by using internal regulator. Mount a zero ohm resistor between the source and drain of Q1 instead of the FET
As a negative side effect, the PWR red LED does dimly turn on even when the system turns off. This issue appears with the production batch of EL2102 only.

Yes, you are right. We changed it early this years to reduce the failure rate of the USB hub controller problem and we confirmed it was very helpful.
Please note that the power consumption in the power-off state is around ~0.3 watt regardless of the PWR red LED state.

Thanks for everyone's help figuring this out. We'll need to pay closer attention to the revision history.

Does this mean the dead USB3.0 issues has maybe been fixed through a hardware revision (like seen in this thread viewtopic.php?f=181&t=43075)?

I've been holding off picking up a N2+ waiting to see if the root cause was determined and maybe fixed. I see that the Ameridroid reseller has a backlog right now so when they receive new ones they should be with this fix, correct?

Yes, The USB hub controllers failure(dead USB 3.0) rate was around 0.2% in the last year. It is less than 0.05% certainly in this year.
