XU4 Ubuntu 20.04 - EGL / Mali issues after doing updates

Post by tkcmd »

I noticed that updating the Ubuntu 20.04 image breaks EGL / Mali support.
After installing a fresh image for example the command "eglinfo" works as should and dumps all related info.
But after doing the auto update it looks like it breaks functionality.
An example of this

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ eglinfo
EGL client extensions string:
    EGL_EXT_client_extensions EGL_EXT_platform_base
    EGL_KHR_client_get_all_proc_addresses EGL_KHR_platform_x11
    EGL_EXT_platform_x11

X11 platform:
ERROR: The DDK is not compatible with any of the Mali GPUs on the system.
The DDK was built for 0x620 r0p1 status range [0..15], but none of the GPUs matched:
eglinfo: eglInitialize failed
I would suspect something went wrong during the updates and overwrite components / drivers that should't be overwritten.
Anyone can help with this ?

Try reinstalling the Mali driver and let us know the result.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mali-x11 --reinstall
BTW, what is your current kernel version after reboot?

Reinstalling mali-x11 did not fix the issue even after reboot.
would indeed suspect it is kernel related.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ eglinfo

    EGL_KHR_client_get_all_proc_addresses EGL_KHR_platform_x11

What's the best way to update the kernel to 5.4.134-225? I'm at 5.4.134-222 after running apt update, apt upgrade, apt dist-upgrade, and apt autoremove. My eglinfo exactly matches tkcmd's output above...

I stopped work on the n2+ to get a 20.04 image working on the xu4. So I need to figure out how to get webgl set up with the appropriate chromium settings. It's been a long time since I set this up on 18.04, and I'm not sure I had it set up correctly. After I get this working, I'll pick up on the n2+ again.

I'm going to back this image up in case I brick it. Any assistance getting chromium dialed in would be appreciated.

Thanks!

apt update and apt upgrade and reboot were enough for me.
Can you show me the result outputs from the apt update and upgrade commands?

Aargh... I was shelled into the xu4, and lost connection. I typed reboot in the terminal and rebooted my local box instead of the xu4.

I just loaded my master emmc, and it booted up to 5.4.141-226. I must not have rebooted the other emmc card I was working on while I backed up my master emmc. My .Xauthority file keeps changing the owner to root, so I can't log in until I correct it. It's been tedious to get to where I can test this.

I think I'm good. Thank you for the quick response. I was looking at webgl or maybe it's webgl2 I need to figure out when I bounced my box.

Mali GPU works fine on the same kernel 5.4.141-226 now.
Run that command on the Mate desktop terminal instead of remote console.

Or, login via "odroid/odroid" and run a OpenGL-ES2 test program something like this. You can see a GPU rendering on a HDMI monitor from SSH access.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid:~$ DISPLAY=:0 glmark2-es2
=======================================================
    glmark2 2021.02
=======================================================
    OpenGL Information
    GL_VENDOR: ARM
    GL_RENDERER: Mali-T628

No problem with running eglinfo locally... but I'm getting command not found for glmark2-es2 command.

When I look into chrome://gpu, I see google Inc, google swiftshader, and opengl es 3.0 swiftshader 4.1.0.7. I was reading viewtopic.php?f=95&t=35686&p=262297&hil ... er#p262297

I haven't checked, but I think chromium might be installed as a snap. I was looking at chrome://gpu and chrome://flags. I'm not sure what settings I need to change, or where to change them. I can't display any fish in the aquarium due to an error stating unable to create webgl or something along those lines.

I'm going to call it a day, and come back to this tomorrow. Thank you for your assistance... We are going to try screen rotation via css configuration, and I'm hopeful that I can get improved frames per second on this image.

sudo apt install glmark2-es2 works fine for installing the EGL test application.

But, I confirm WebGL HW acceleration doesn't work on Chromium 92.0.4515.159.
We will check what's wrong. I think Google or Canonical might break something again. :(

Meanwhile, consider using this great image which comes with a much faster Chromium WebGL rendering performance.
Its webgl aquarium benchmark result is almost twice faster than our stock image.

I probably should have started a new thread. Let me know if I should do so... I'm trying to figure out what flags need to be set and where the config file is to set them for snap. Or maybe I need to uninstall snap version and reinstall like I did on the n2+. I thought I needed to also set a config file somewhere for the webgl stuff. I'm just really confused on where to start because chromium is behaving so strangely. I'm adding --kiosk, --incognito, and --no-first-run to the browser call right now as I've done in the past on the current image we are using. I'll take a picture of the chrome://gpu page and upload to photobucket shortly...

I started with the ubuntu-20.04-5.4-mate-odroid-xu4-20210113.img.xz image. I've finally got my stuff working to a point where the application starts the chromium browser version 92.0.4515.159 snap. Chromium is definitely having issues.

I will set this image aside for now, and check the image you just recommended... I'm really far along on this image if it is able to be fixed. I've documented along the way so I can probably get things set up a bit quicker on the image you recommended.

We were posting at the same time! Thank you!

It's been a minute... There is a 5+ hour delay to complete the download for free. I had to download it again the next day because the first download was corrupted.

This is a really cool image! 8-)

I figured I would try to install the drivers for the wifi dongle first.

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:0811 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Realtek 8812AU/8821AU 802.11ac WLAN Adapter [USB Wireless Dual-Band Adapter 2.4/5Ghz]
I've tried two approaches, but both failed.
First approach: https://github.com/morrownr/8821au resulted in:

Code: Select all

Running install-driver.sh version 20210524
Starting installation.
Copying source files to: /usr/src/rtl8821au-5.8.2.3
Copying 8821au.conf to: /etc/modprobe.d

Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/rtl8821au/5.8.2.3/source ->
                 /usr/src/rtl8821au-5.8.2.3

DKMS: add completed.
Error! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 5.8.18-HK cannot be found at
/lib/modules/5.8.18-HK/build or /lib/modules/5.8.18-HK/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located.
An error occurred. dkms build error = 1
Please report this error.
Second approach:

Code: Select all

[root@odroidxu 8821au]# yum -y install rtl8821au-dkms
Invalid configuration value: installonly_limit=1 in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf; value 1 is not allowed
Last metadata expiration check: 0:30:41 ago on Thu 26 Aug 2021 10:54:28 PM CEST.
No match for argument: rtl8821au-dkms
Error: Unable to find a match: rtl8821au-dkms
I'll try to resolve, but hoping someone more familiar with Fedora might know. I'll post on the thread that you recommended. Thanks!

We tried to install the previous version of Chromium 91.x.x.x which worked well with the Mali EGL.
But, the sandbox snap package manager didn't allow it.
We probably need to build our own Chromium with some source code modification for EGL compatibility.
It may take a couple of weeks.

BTW, I've not enough experience of developing on that Fedora image.
I just think the DKMB build might work once you download his kernel source and make a symlink to point the kernel header location.
I hope the image developer(MastaG) will help you too.

I'm going to trash the image I've been working on, and reinstall a fresh copy of his image. I'll take another crack if he replies to my message.

I'll start working on the n2+ image again in the meantime. I'll watch for the chromium update. I really appreciate you looking into it.

If you want to test a webGL hardware acceleration on the N2+, you need to use this tobetter's Ubuntu 21.04 image which runs a generic desktop OpenGL instead of the EGL/OpenGL-ES.
The stock Chromium works well with the desktop OpenGL acceleration out of the box.

Thank you. That's the image I've been working from. I did dabble with 22.10, but went back to 21.04.

MastaG gave me instructions to download and recompile the kernel. I was able to install the dkms driver. I updated those steps in MastG's Fedora thread you referred me to above.

After update/upgrade, I enabled Override software rendering list, GPU rasterization, & Zero-copy rasterizer.

Canvas, Composting, Out-of-process Rasterization, Rasterization, WebGL, & WebGL2 are hardware accelerated.
Multiple Raster Threads, OpenGL, & Skia Renderer are enabled.
Video Decode is Software only. Hardware acceleration is disabled.
Vulkan is Disabled.

The aquarium with 500 fish bench-marking is at 16-18 frames per second.

I added --in-process-gpu to the browser call, but it didn't improve aquarium fps. It did throw a GL_INVALID_FRAMEBUFFER_OPERATION error.

I'll have to figure out where to configure the chromium browser flags in the snap version. I typically just add them to the browser call, but would rather configure them if possible.

Any other chrome://flags or chrome://gpu settings I can tweak to speed things up?

Re: XU4 Ubuntu 20.04 - EGL / Mali issues after doing updates

Post by odroid »

I've just updated the system as @mdrjr mentioned and I didn't touch anything.
The Aquarium example frame rate on the newly installed Chromium 91.0.4472.27 is steady at 26~27fps with a typical 1080p display. Which seems to be the best performance on X11 while MastaG's Fedora Wayland could be near 50fps.

I removed the stock chromium 92 to minimize side effect by "sudo snap remove chromium".

I verified that I'm on the same chromium version as you. I also ran chromium-browser command and went to the aquarium url. I'm still at 16 - 18 fps.

I've created another user account that I'm running the browser under, so I logged in as odroid user to compare. I navigated to the chromium icon under internet, and noticed 2 chromium icons. One is version 91 & the other is version 92. I selected version 91, and bam! 28 - 30 fps.

So it seems that the wrong chromium version is being selected when executed via command line. This is awesome! I'll need to see if I can uninstall the version 92 without clobbering version 91.

sudo snap remove chromium command could remove the stock version 92 safely.

I've removed snap version 92.

I spoke too soon. I still get 17 fps using the user id I created. I get 29 fps using the odroid user.

I have no clue what would cause this to happen. I will start comparing the difference between the user profiles as best as possible.

I recall reading somewhere on this forum about somebody creating a user id using odroid as a template maybe... I'll see if I can dig that up. I'm also seeing if there is something in the Preferences file...

Check the groups your user has access to and compare it with the odroid user.
For example /dev/fb0 should be read/writeable for "video" group and the "odroid" user is part of that group.
A new user may not necessarily be part of that group, which causes the system to incorrectly read refresh rate of the display, which causes all kinds of side effects.

Thank you for the suggestion. I added the following groups so that both users belong to the same groups:

Code: Select all

adm disk lp kmem dialout sudo audio video scanner kvm pulse pulse-access bluetooth lightdm nopasswdlogin
After a reboot, I'm still at 17 fps for 500 fish.
